Make sure you have a way to receive weather watches and warnings – the City’s post offers tips on reputable sources. Naperville’s professional staff has been monitoring the forecast and making plans to respond to any storm-related impacts and preserve life, health, and safety. I’m following up on my message yesterday regarding the city’s response to this week’s severe weather. As of 5 a.m. this morning, June 12, all major power outages had been resolved. We will also hold a free citywide brush collection beginning the week of June 15. You can find all the details in the city’s post below.

I am grateful to our professional staff for their hard work over the past 48 hours. As of this morning, our Public Works team received 589 service requests and is handling them by priority. With these back-to-back storms, cleanup will continue throughout June. Thank you for your patience as we move through this process.

Most importantly, there are no known injuries among our residents and City staff. My thoughts are not only with Naperville today but also with the communities to our north, south, and east that suffered significant structural and property damage yesterday. Events like these remind us to hug our loved ones a little tighter and reach out to our neighbors so that, during challenging times, we can be there for each other. Naperville is the model for neighbors helping neighbors, and the last few days prove it. Thank you, .

Due to the recent severe weather, the City is conducting a free citywide special bulk brush collection beginning the week of June 15. Here’s what you need to do to prepare:

• Place any brush and tree debris on the parkway in front of your home by Monday morning, June 15.

• City and contractor crews will be working quickly to make one collection pass throughout the entire city. To ensure your brush is collected as part of this special pick-up, you must have it out by Monday morning, June 15.

• You do not need to cut, tie, sticker, or bag brush.

• The special collection is expected to conclude by the end of the day on Saturday, June 27. After that time, any remaining brush on private property must be disposed of through the weekly yard waste program (full details are at www.naperville.il.us/yardwaste ) or by a privately contracted tree removal company.

A quick update after yesterday's storms. The most important thing first: no injuries to the public or our crews have been reported. That matters more to me than anything else we are dealing with.

The update from the City below shows that our folks have been at it since the storm rolled through and haven't stopped. We received 589 calls between 3 and 11 p.m. yesterday. Police, fire, public works, and our emergency management volunteers have been clearing limbs, opening roads, and watching the neighborhoods, while our electric crews and outside contractors work long hours to get power back on. Most of the outages trace back to the wind bringing big limbs down on overhead lines, which can snap a wire, create a fault or knock out a whole neighborhood. Crews have to clear the trees safely before they can make repairs, and that's why some of you have waited longer than I'd like. They are working relentlessly to restore all customers. And please, if you see a downed line, stay away and keep kids and pets back. Treat every line on the ground like it's live, because it might be. Don't touch it, don't drive over it, and call it in.

I’m sharing an update from the city below on some of the major efforts, including the big question on whether we’ll have a special brush collection. Also, we are not done yet. More storms are possible later today. I’m in constant communication with our city’s professional staff and know they are staffed and prepared to handle whatever comes our way. Watch the National Weather Service alerts, charge your phones, and know your plan.

What has stuck with me is how many stories I’ve heard of neighbors helping neighbors. Clearing a driveway or storm drain, pitching in on cleanup, checking on the older couple down the block. I know you’ll continue to help each other through the next round of weather, too. That is Naperville, and I could not be prouder.

Naperville Public Works, Electric, and public safety crews have been working around the clock since yesterday afternoon’s severe weather. Here is the latest update on what’s been done and ongoing efforts:

Tree Debris Removal:
• All roads fully blocked by tree debris were open by midnight.
• Crews are responding to over 300 service requests and will head back to intersections to remove tree debris today and work on additional needs, like clearing blocked sidewalks, over the next several days.

The big question we’re hearing: Will there be a special free bulk brush collection in hard-hit areas? The answer: It’s too soon to know. Crews will assess the amount of tree branches curbside through Monday and make a decision then. If a special collection is announced, it will be communicated via Naper Notify, on our website, and on our social media channels.

Power Outage Restoration
• Approximately 450 Naperville Electric customers remain without power this morning. Restoration depends on tree-trimming crews removing debris so work can safely continue. Power is estimated to be restored by 5 p.m. today, June 11.

Disclaimer: More severe weather is expected in Naperville and the Chicagoland area today, which could lead to changes to these work plans. We have operational crews on standby and ready to respond as needed.

What to Do After Severe Weather
• Outages and downed trees can be reported to the City’s Call Center at 630-420-6060. Our system can handle 50 callers at a time, so there may be a wait.
• You can also report downed trees via the Public Works Request Center at https://data.naperville.il.us/pages/request-center.
• For Police and Fire emergencies, call 911.

Gone, but never forgotten.

Today, we pause to remember those in Naperville and across the country who gave their lives in service to America. The annual Memorial Day parade is a chance to tell our Gold Star families that their loved one’s sacrifice wasn’t in vain but instead remains the foundation of our freedom – a freedom we will never take for granted.

Seeing Naperville come out to honor those who were lost reminds us all how important it is to come together as a community during these moments, especially during the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. This weekend, the Fort Payne Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a plaque honoring our nation’s first veterans: American Revolutionary soldiers, sailors, and contributing citizens. This meaningful gesture reminds us of our past and of those who, from the earliest days of our country, believed so strongly in freedom that they were willing to fight for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it.

I encourage everyone to take a moment today -- and every day -- to remember and honor the lost and their families. Naperville will never forget.

May is an especially busy month for public service recognitions, and it was a privilege to present a proclamation to the men and women of our very own Naperville Police Department last week during 2026's Police Week. And just yesterday, I was able to visit with many of our Public Works employees to acknowledge their contributions during National Public Works Week.

While these national weeks are important reminders to stop and recognize the many different people and departments that make our city run, these are the people who, year-round, make Naperville the exceptional city that it is. Whether it's our first responders or our Public Works crews, their public service is the backbone of Naperville. And that's worth celebrating all year long!

Last Friday, I joined Consul General Anton Lungu to celebrate a ceremonial raising of the flag of the Republic of Moldova at the Consulate General of the Republic of Moldova. It’s been a year since the consulate office opened in north Naperville, helping to strengthen our city’s ties with the global community. These partnerships help bring new economic and cultural opportunities to regions, and Naperville is proud to be home to Moldova’s Chicago consulate. Friday’s flag raising was a chance to celebrate their presence and continue deepening our connections with each other.

Naperville has always been defined by the people who show up for our kids - and nobody exemplifies that more than Seth Brady. Twenty-two years in the classroom. Courses in peace studies, world religions, anthropology - subjects that challenge kids to see the world differently and care about it. And if that weren’t enough, Seth helped create the Illinois Global Scholar Certificate, changing how students across the entire state learn. That’s the kind of teacher - and the kind of person - who changes lives. Congratulations, Mr. Brady on being named Illinois Teacher of the Year. All of Naperville is proud of you!

It was a privilege late last week to honor two professional city staff groups who dedicate their lives to serving others, whether our residents or the animals they love.

This week is both National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week. Our telecommunicators, our “heroes with headsets,” answer 911 calls and dispatch our police and fire crews to the scene of an emergency. They are the calm voice on the other end of the line, helping people in the first seconds of life's most challenging moments.

Our Animal Control officers enforce laws related to animal control and welfare, and they promote responsible pet ownership and care through education and enforcement. They also rescue stray or injured animals and offer guidance on coexisting with local wildlife.

Thank you to these heroes of who help everyone in their time of need.

Congratulations to the Veterans Clubs of Naperville Central and Naperville North High School in their nomination for the Kids Matter - Kindness Counts Award!

The Kindness Counts Award nomination requirement is beautifully simple: how did a person or a group of people spread kindness and how did that kindness impact others?

With a total of around 260 students from both high schools, each and every student has certainly spread kindness in the Naperville community. From hosting guest Veteran speakers to volunteering at hospitals and raising money for veteran-centered services, these students have truly gone above and beyond in their contributions.

Not only have these students given back to their community, their impact has inspired others. In response to the compassion demonstrated by Naperville high schoolers, Waubonsie Valley High School and Benet Academy have begun to develop their own veterans clubs.

It is an honor to nominate Naperville Central and Naperville North High Schools for this esteemed recognition. Thank you for your time and efforts - keep up the good work!
