It was a busy July 4th for your Nantucket Firefighters! 🎆🚒 🚑

Over the course of the day and night, Saturday’s crew responded to 33 calls for service, including:

🏥 Numerous types of medical emergencies

🚲 Multiple bicycle and motor vehicle accidents

🛗 A malfunctioning elevator

⚡ A home struck by lightning

🔥 An unauthorized beach bonfire

At the same time, our members were also out supporting multiple events across the island:

The Nantucket Firecracker 5k Run & Walk

Main Street activities, including The Great Water Fight of ’26 💦

Fireworks support with dedicated crews at Jetties Beach and out on the water working alongside the Harbor Master

Leading up to the festivities, our Fire Prevention personnel were hard at work inspecting food trucks and other downtown occupancies to ensure a safe environment for everyone. This is in addition to performing a safety inspection of the fireworks barge with the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard.

We want to thank our members for their incredible dedication and professionalism during this demanding holiday. We also deeply appreciate the efforts of our public safety partners—without your coordination and assistance, none of this would be possible:

📞 Public Safety Dispatchers

🚔 Nantucket Police Department & Community Service Officers

🏖️ Nantucket Lifeguards

⚓ Harbor Master & U.S. Coast Guard

🏥 Nantucket Cottage Hospital ED Staff

Of course, a big thanks also goes out to the Town of Nantucket for their continued support, and the Town of Nantucket Culture & Tourism for all of their hard work in putting together a great day of events and activities.

It takes an incredible amount of work behind the scenes to ensure our residents and visitors can enjoy a safe 4th of July. Your Nantucket Fire Department and partner agencies are always ready to respond! 💪

🌊 Joint Agency Training at Surfside Beach 🌊

Yesterday morning, members of the Nantucket Harbormaster Lifeguards and the Nantucket Fire Department came together at Surfside Beach to participate in a coordinated ocean rescue drill. 🤝🚒🏊‍♂️

The exercise began with lifeguards identifying a swimmer in distress and entering the water to execute a rescue. After making contact, the scenario escalated when the simulated patient became unresponsive, prompting lifeguards to notify our Dispatch Center and initiate a Fire Department response. Lifeguards continued patient care and removal from the beach to the Surfside parking lot.

Upon arrival, FD personnel worked seamlessly alongside lifeguards to assess the patient, continue emergency medical care, and coordinate a rapid transport.

Joint drills like this are vital for refining our skills and streamlining communication between agencies. By practicing these critical handoffs today, we ensure a faster, more cohesive response when future events arise.

Thank you to everyone from both departments for your dedication to keeping our community safe!

This past week we were fortunate to have the training company Spec Rescue International on island to train a group of our firefighters and officers up to the Technician level of Trench Rescue. Being able to train on Nantucket in our sandy soils is key to having our personnel better understand the hazards of these situations, and being able to develop response plans in the event of an emergency. By training our personnel to the technician level they will have the ability to handle straight and intersecting trenches, as well as trenches deeper than 8'. We thank our personnel for participating in the program and the Town of Nantucket for supporting us in these efforts!
