June is Month - let’s talk about “self-neglect” and what it looks like💙

Neglecting an older, vulnerable adult under your care is a form of elder abuse. But some seniors who live independently can fall into self-neglect, often due to dementia, mental illness, addiction, or becoming physically frail.

Self-Neglect happens when vulnerable adults fail to care for their own basic needs such as safe housing, appropriate medical care, adequate food and water, and personal hygiene.

Here are some common signs to look out for:

✅Living in a hoarded or hazardous home
✅Living in a home without proper utilities like water, heat, electricity (unpaid bills)
✅Inadequate food or drinking water
✅Increased social isolation / withdrawal
✅Living with unmet medical needs, untreated illnesses or injuries
✅Failing to care for their pets
✅Failing to care for their own personal hygiene or safety
✅Deteriorating mental or physical state (memory loss, dementia, addiction, mental illness, or a physical limitation that keeps them from being able to care for themselves properly)

While abuse is never the victim’s fault, there are some simple things older adults can do to reduce their vulnerability to financial, physical, and emotional abuse ⬇️

💙 Take care of your health to the best of your ability – eat well, stay active, and get medical checkups so you can stay independent as long as possible
💚 Seek professional help for drug/alcohol concerns and mental health challenges
💛 Learn the signs of elder abuse and domestic abuse
💙 Plan for your future – establish an official power of attorney or a living will, you can address health care decisions now to avoid confusion and family problems later. Seek independent advice from someone you trust before signing any documents.
💚 Stay active in the community and keep connected with friends and family
💛 Take charge of posting and opening your own mail
💙 Don’t give out personal information over the phone & get educated on scams and fraud (scammers change their tactics yearly!)
💚 Use direct deposit for all checks, so they can’t be tampered with
💛 Have your own personal phone, especially if you are in a retirement home or assisted living home
💙 Reviewing your Will periodically to see that it has not been altered
💚 Never sign documents that you don’t fully understand or that someone is pressuring you to sign
💛 Know your rights - If you have of a paid or family caregiver, you have the right to voice your needs and concerns. If you live in a nursing home, call your Long-Term Care Ombudsman. The ombudsman is your advocate and has the power to intervene on your behalf.
