Nampa High School Placed on Hall Check; Situation Turned Out to Be a Large-Scale, Regional Swatting Incident

On September 8, 2026, at 12:34 p.m., Nampa Dispatch received a call from a female reporting that her boyfriend was outside Nampa High School and that she was concerned he would cause problems. Nampa Police Officers were dispatched to the school, and the Nampa Police Real Time Crime Center (RTC) began checking the reported area. Using cameras, the RTC could see the area where the suspicious person was reported to be located, and they confirmed the suspect described was not there. Officers continued to canvass the area. Additionally, School Resource Officers were working with school staff, and Nampa High School was placed in hall check status*.

While canvassing the school campus, officers located an unattended backpack outside. Coupled with the call to dispatch and out of an abundance of caution for safety, NPD RTC staff reviewed video footage of the backpack being dropped off and a person walking away. The Nampa Police Department Bomb Unit responded, and officers X-rayed the backpack. A laptop computer and an e-bike battery were inside.

A photo circulating on social media showing a backpack and other items is actually the backpack in question and Nampa Police Bomb Unit X-ray equipment. Nampa PD found no weapons with the backpack.

It has been determined that this incident was a “swatting” incident, which is a dangerous crime that takes resources away from real emergencies.

*Hall Check: a standard school safety response protocol where hallways are cleared, and students and staff return to their classrooms or another designated location, stopping movement, securing students in a safe location, and detecting any unusual circumstances. Instruction and educational activities continue during a hall check.

Two Victims from August 31, 2026, DUI Crash Die

On August 31, 2026, at approximately 9:46 a.m., Nampa Police, Nampa Fire District, and Canyon County Paramedics responded to a serious-injury, multi-vehicle crash at Middleton Road and Lake Lowell Avenue. One of the victims in the crash was eight months pregnant and sustained life-threatening injuries as a result. On the day of the crash, an emergency cesarean section was performed, and a baby girl was delivered.

On September 3, 2026, an updated press release reported the arrest of Abigail Nicole Wolverton, 29 years old, of Nampa.

Today, we are saddened to report the deaths of both the mother and infant victims of this crash. Kyara L. Engelhart, 19 years old, of Caldwell, died on Thursday, September 3, 2026. Maelynn M. Lindauer, six days old, died on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The two counts of aggravated DUI that Wolverton was charged with on September 3 have been amended to two counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter. Wolverton also has the original charge of injury to a child for the child who was in her vehicle.

“This case is a stark reminder of the result of impaired driving,” said Sergeant Doug Harward, Nampa Police Department Traffic Unit. “Lives were changed forever because of Ms. Wolverton’s decisions. There is no excuse to drive impaired.”
