It's a hot one today! By taking a few precautions, you can protect yourself and your family from heat exhaustion and heat stroke when the temperatures creep up.

🌞 Stay hydrated! Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty.

🌞 Those at high risk for heat-related illness (young children, elderly and people
with chronic medical conditions) should stay in an air conditioned environment on days when the temperature exceeds 95 degrees.

🌞 Pace yourself while exercising or playing in hot weather. Be sure to take breaks in the shade.

🌞 Protect your skin using reef-safe sunscreen and reapplying every two hours.

🌞 Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat. Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.

🌞 Sign up for beach condition alerts on OBXAlerts.com, which include extreme heat alerts.

All consumer fireworks (and sky lanterns) are prohibited in Nags Head.

If you're familiar with our beautiful beach town, you know two things: we're known for our wind, and many of our homes feature wood-shingle exteriors and roofs. When fireworks are combined with wind and combustible materials, the risk of fire increases significantly.

In addition, July can be a very dry month, and each year fireworks have the potential to ignite grass, mulch, and other vegetation throughout our community.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping keep Nags Head safe for everyone.

Leave the shows to the pros and enjoy your summer.

If you’re planning on visiting our beautiful beach, take a moment to watch this powerful video, Service and Heroism, The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story.

Our dedicated lifeguards put their lives on the line every day to keep locals and visitors safe. This is a great reminder of the importance of ocean safety and respecting the water.
