Sustainability in Action:

These students are doing something truly special. Through composting, waste diversion, recycling, and showing up to zero waste convenings across the state and continent, the young people of Mālama Aina Compostables are proving that student voices and student advocacy matter.

They’re the ones inheriting the challenges they didn’t create, and they’re showing up anyway with creativity, heart, and real solutions.

Today through May 22nd is Heat Safety Week (May 18–22) and summer is right around the corner. Just in time for a refresher on how to stay safe in the heat!

Hawaiʻi’s warm temperatures combined with some of the highest humidity levels in the country make heat-related illness a very real concern for our communities. In fact, the number of hot and humid days across the islands has more than doubled in the past decade due to climate change, and that trend is expected to continue.

Heat-related illness can affect anyone, but keiki, kūpuna, outdoor workers, pregnant people, and those with pre-existing conditions are especially at risk. Knowing the signs and how to respond can make all the difference.
This week and all summer long, we encourage our community to stay hydrated, check on neighbors, find shade or cool spaces during peak heat hours, and know when to call for help.

Sustainability in Action: Meet Lala with

Lala reminds us that caring for the ʻāina isn’t a new idea, yet over time we’ve drifted from our kuleana to protect it. True sustainability has to be rooted in that responsibility, and it’s OSCER’s role is to help bridge that gap.

Mahalo for joining us throughout this campaign as we highlighted how climate change and invasive species amplify each other’s impacts on our islands. Hawaiʻi’s unique ecosystems, communities, and resources are especially vulnerable—and invasive species only intensify these challenges.

Together with our partners across the State of Hawaiʻi and the four counties, we explored how these issues shape our health, environment, and future. Despite the growing pressures of climate change and natural disasters, we continue to embrace our kuleana to protect our home and safeguard Hawaiʻi for future generations. Together, we can protect Hawaiʻi—today and for the years to come.
