📜 History Happens Here — Lebanon Brewery, now Lebanon Valley Craft Brewery

The Lebanon Brewery opened at 840 North 7th Street in 1856, launching a local brewing tradition that would last more than a century. Incorporated as the Lebanon Brewing Company in 1887, it produced porter, cream ale, and four la**rs (about 7,000 gallons a year) and even welcomed female tour guests to a tea house.

After weathering Prohibition, the brewery entered a new era in 1933, when William Donmoyer invested about $250,000 to reopen and expand it into Lebanon’s largest brewery. The eight-building complex could store 60,000 barrels and continued operating until 1959, when the Lebanon Valley Brewing Company closed.

Today, the original boiler house, horse stable, and a towering 1930s brew kettle still help tell its story. Since 2017, Lebanon Valley Craft Brewery has brought brewing back to the property while preserving its remarkable heritage.

Visitors can take a behind-the-scenes tour to learn about the brewery’s early years, its Prohibition-era changes, historic bottling operations, and how b**r is made there today. From 1856 to today, this Lebanon landmark is still brewing history!

📜 History Happens Here – Brendle Museum & POS of A Hall, Schaefferstown

The Brendle Museum is located on the eastern side of the village, along Route 419 PA Scenic Byway and sits across the street from HSI’s Gemberling-Rex House Museum. Part of Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. (HSI), the Brendle Museum is named for Thomas R. Brendle who was a local resident and leader in the preservation of Pennsylvania German folklore at the time. The museum displays a wide variety of cultural artifacts. The lower-level hosts events including lectures, classes, and individual and group artisan shows.

HSI provided two of their best photos of the Brendle Museum when it was a Patriotic Order Sons of America lodge hall! The first was most likely taken around 1910, given the decorations, at the dedication of the POS of A Hall on July 2, 1910. Someone had to climb up in the attic and through the hatch in the roof to put up the American flag. Zion Church has similar access to its roof. Town resident, Benjamin Hartman, was the builder on both projects. The second photo may record the same day; the Schaefferstown Silver Cornet Band posed on the front steps of the POS of A Hall. Building dedications were a major event, celebrated by everyone in town!
