Saddened to hear about the loss of three lives today, including the loss of Trooper Vernon Brake. Please keep their families, friends, and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

It is with deep sorrow the Oklahoma Highway Patrol announces the line of duty death of Trooper Vernon Brake.

On April 8, 2026, at 11:27 a.m., a vehicle traveling southbound on I-35 lost control for an unknown reason and crossed the center cable barrier. The vehicle struck Trooper Brake, who was traveling in the northbound lanes just south of Hefner Road in Oklahoma City.

Trooper Brake was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the other involved vehicle, along with a four-year-old passenger, were also pronounced deceased at the scene.

Trooper Brake was a graduate of the 56th OHP Academy in 2006 and has proudly served the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for nearly 20 years, with a significant amount of time assigned to Troop S (commercial motor vehicle enforcement). After his graduation from the academy, he also served in Oklahoma and Logan Counties.

Trooper Brake is survived by his wife and two children.

Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with his family as well as the family of the other driver involved.

OHP's Traffic Homicide Unit (THU) is conducting the investigation into the crash.

Please keep Captain Alexander in your thoughts and prayers!

We want to congratulate Mayor-Elect Michael Ray on winning the mayoral race! Our lodge was proud to stand behind him during this election, and today’s outcome reflects what we’ve seen all along — Michael is a leader who listens, leads with integrity, and genuinely cares about the safety and well-being of this community.

We look forward to working alongside Mayor-Elect Ray as he steps into this new role and continues building a stronger, safer, and more unified future for our city.

Congratulations, well deserved. 👏

We’re very proud of and thankful for all Sergeant Trujillo does for our great community!

Ben Trujillo has volunteered as a reserve police officer for over 25 years. Ben began his journey in Law Enforcement in Eastern Oklahoma County in 2000 when he joined the Nicoma Park Police Department, where he served in the reserve capacity until 2020. During his time with Nicoma Park, Ben also served for the Harrah Police Department from 2006 to 2009. In April of 2020 Ben joined the Mustang Police Department as a recruit reserve patrol officer. Over the past five years, Ben completed his field training, worked various shifts in our Patrol Division and weekly serves as security for our Municipal Court.

Ben has sacrificially volunteered his personal time to not only the department, but to the Mustang community as a whole. Ben Trujillo has successfully met the requirements, and is very deserving of and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant at a ceremony this afternoon.

Ben’s long-standing commitment to sacrifice his time to serve others is a shining example of true public service. Congratulations Sergeant Trujillo!
