Muskegon Lighthouses

Muskegon Lighthouses Muskegon Lighthouses are an essential part of our Shoreline City’s maritime history since 1851.

South Pierhead Lighthouse (1903) and South Breakwater Lighthouse (1931) retain 20th century history, kept safe in our present time and guide us to our future.

For nearly a century, the South Breakwater Lighthouse has been part of Muskegon’s history.

Save Our Light Co-Chairs, Don and Nancy Crandall, share why preserving this landmark matters — not just as a structure, but as a symbol of who we are as a community.

Lake Michigan winters are relentless. Ice builds, water seeps in, and freezing temperatures slowly weaken the structure.

The South Breakwater Lighthouse was completed in 1929 and put into permanent operation in 1931. Now it needs our help to remain strong for the future.
