It’s coming…..

Patsy Petty, civic leader and Muskegon community icon was on our team and collected signatures for the Term Limit proposal. Patsy felt so passionate about term limits that even with declining mobility she gathered petition signatures before her passing this year.

She was actively involved in campaigns and ensuring the integrity of elections for 55 years.( see Muskegon Rising podcast May 1, 2024).If anyone in the community would have the best insight for the case for Term Limits it would have been Patsy Petty. Bless you Patsy, no one cared about community more than you.

Our term limits initiative is about one thing — establishing long-term checks and balances to keep local government fair, accountable, and representative of the people.

It has never been about targeting any current or former city commissioner. To be clear, we WILL NOT challenge any elected commissioner who chooses to seek another term in the upcoming election.

This effort is, and always has been, about strengthening our city’s future, not dividing it.

One concern we’ve heard: “Won’t term limits cause a loss of institutional knowledge?”

The truth is, our city already has professional staff — managers, planners, clerks, and department heads — who keep the day-to-day work moving forward. That knowledge doesn’t disappear when elected officials rotate.

What term limits do is make sure that leadership opportunities aren’t locked up for decades. Muskegon is one of the most diverse cities in Michigan, with talent and experience spread across every neighborhood and community. Term limits ensure that more people — from different generations, backgrounds, and cultures — have a fair chance to bring their perspectives into city government.

12 years is plenty of time to serve, learn, and contribute. After that, it’s time for others to step up and help shape the future of Muskegon.

On November 4, vote YES for term limits.

Why set the limit at 12 years? Let’s explore 👇🏼

Because it gives leaders enough time to serve, but it also makes sure that over time, more voices get a chance to sit at the table.

Muskegon is a city full of people from different backgrounds, neighborhoods, and cultures. Our city commission should reflect that. Term limits help open the door so that new leaders — younger generations, working families, and people from all corners of our community — can bring their ideas forward.

This is about building a system that works for Muskegon’s future. On Nov 4, vote YES for 12-year term limits.

⏳ We’re only 55 days away from making history in Muskegon.

On November 4, you will have the chance to decide:

✅ A YES vote = 12-year term limits for city commissioners — more accountability, more fairness, and more opportunity for new voices.

❌ A NO vote = unlimited terms — the same people can hold power for decades.

Thousands of Muskegon citizens signed the petition to get this on the ballot. Now it’s up to ALL of us to finish the job.

💪 Let’s cross the finish line together. Vote YES Nov 4.
