One of the skills we emphasize on our team is stability. Public safety divers are often responsible for evidence collection, and while that sometimes requires digging through silt in zero vis, it can also require extreme refinement of technique to prevent evidence being accidentally buried or crime scenes from being disturbed more than necessary. When necessary and conditions allow, public safety divers should be able to search a scene without disturbing anything. How often do you work on buoyancy, propulsion, trim, and stability?

The MCSDT ran a training exercise at Adelaide Pointe, today. The focus was on implementing SOPs for a search from shore using line and tenders. The team successfully recovered a mock target as they made preparations for the upcoming summer boating and swimming season. Shout out to Alex for not only running the training, but for finding the team mannequin as well!

MCSDT Special Deputy Diver Michael Johnson and Chief Diver Jessy Thompson completed two courses this past week in High Springs, Florida. Special Deputy Johnson completed his ISC Megalodon CCR Helitrox Decompression course, while Thompson completed his ISC Megalodon CCR instructor courses (Air Dil through Deco Helitrox).

Although CCR units are not part of the PSD tool kit, the training — especially in standardized systems, team protocols, and situational awareness — is applicable to every operation we have.

And Deputy Thompson has used his unit to assist in deep water missions, including a search for a missing Cessna in 210’ of water in Lake Huron.

Thompson and Johnson completed their training under the instruction of Dr. Mel Clark, author of Rebreathers Simplified. Dr. Clark is an expert on CCR diving and an excellent instructor, specializing in technical, cave, and CCR diving.

This week’s diver profile features Special Deputy Diver Ryan Innis.

Ryan began his diving career when he attended the USMC combatant dive school in 2010. After leaving active duty, he maintained an interest in the sport over the years. He joined the MCSDT in May 2025.

“I enjoy the opportunity of being on this team as a way to use a skillset of mine to serve my community, but also working with a great group of like-minded, mission driven people while advancing my diving abilities”

Ryan is currently certified in advanced open water, wreck diving, and FFM. He displays an incredible calm under pressure and set the team record for the IADRS Watermanship Test during our December training with an almost perfect score!
