Leaping lizards! 🦎🌿

Have you met this fascinating resident of Dune Harbor Park?

This cool creature is a Five-lined Skink, one of the only native lizards found in the Great Lakes region! Young skinks are especially easy to recognize thanks to their bright blue tails and bold yellow stripes, which help them distract predators while they make a quick escape.

This little reptile was spotted enjoying the new pollinator garden near the Lincoln lot, where native plants create great habitat for insects, birds, and other wildlife. Skinks love warm sunny spots, rocky areas, and places with plenty of cover to hide.

If you visit Dune Harbor this summer, keep your eyes peeled along sunny edges, logs, rocks, and garden spaces. You might spot one darting by!

Please remember to admire wildlife from a distance and avoid trying to handle or catch these animals so they can stay safe and wild. 💚

Before & After! 🚧🌿

Meinert Park is on the "road" to recovery!

After a culvert collapse during this year’s heavy rainy season, repairs have been made, and access to the full park has been restored. Our staff and amazing neighbors are thrilled to once again enjoy the entire park together.

To ensure long-term safety and stability, additional construction will still be needed to fully replace the culvert drain. We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and support during this process!

Shoutout to our amazing volunteers! 🌱💚

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, our May events were a HUGE success! Together, we planted more than 1,000 aquatic and terrestrial native plants throughout Dune Harbor Park.

These native plants will help improve habitat, support wildlife, strengthen water quality, and create healthier ecosystems both on land and in the water.

A special thank-you to our partners at the Muskegon Conservation District for helping make these events possible and supporting native habitat restoration efforts across our community.

Opportunities like these would not be possible without the generous support of the Consumers Energy Foundation Planet Award Grant.

🦉 Creature Feature Friday!
Check out this stunning Barred Owl spotted right here at Pioneer Park—those soulful dark eyes and striped feathers make it one of Michigan’s most recognizable woodland residents!

You might even hear their classic call echoing through the trees: “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” 👀🌲

Barred Owls are known for thriving in mature forests near water, making many of our Muskegon County Parks the perfect place to spot (or hear!) them if you’re out exploring—especially around dusk or dawn.

Have you come across any amazing wildlife during your park visits lately? Drop your sightings in the comments—we’d love to see what you’ve discovered out there! 🌿🐾
