Last night’s HazMat training consisted of a comprehensive scenario involving the discovery of an unknown powder in a public occupancy with multiple symptomatic patients. Members worked through isolation, identification, PPE selection, decontamination procedures, and unified command operations.

Our Team was honored to participate in this year’s event at the Walmart in Roosevelt Park and helped some Christmas Cheer! 🎄

Our team has assisted with three HazMat incidents over the past week, including a semi tractor-trailer rollover, a motorhome propane tank leak, and a submerged tug vessel releasing multiple hydrocarbons into Spring Lake. Across these responses, our team provided technical expertise, leak confinement and product offloading support, and boom deployment to prevent further environmental impact during today’s incident.

Hazmat Team members spent the morning training with other HazMat teams from Region 6 as part of an annual training exercise.

Unfortunately, due to weather, the planned hands-on scenarios were transitioned into classroom instruction and tabletop exercises. We’re grateful to Hudsonville Ice Cream for graciously hosting this year’s event.

These opportunities are valuable for building connections between teams and sharpening skills to ensure readiness when it matters most.

Muskegon County HazMat Team members assisted Muskegon Professional Firefighters - IAFF Local 370 Thursday morning with an active diesel fuel leak from the fuel tank on a garbage truck that was inadvertently damaged by a manhole cover that came dislodged when it was driven over. Team members assisted with stopping the leak, transferring remaining fuel in the tank to another truck, and assist with cleanup efforts from the spill

Seven members from our team have spent the week at the Michigan HazMat Responder Conference learning new techniques, emerging threats, and sharpening skills. The annual conference has top notch instructors from across North America and is being attended by over 250 Hazardous Materials Professionals. Shout out to MSP-EMHSTC staff for putting together another fantastic conference!

Tonight’s training focused on a full scenario exercise for an unknown white powder found in mail at a simulated public building. Our team practiced the crucial steps in identifying and dealing with suspicious materials. Complications like no lights to simulate unexpected, real-world conditions that could affect decision-making and response times are factors we try to add to our trainings. This is just one of many situations we might be called to assist with in the field.
