In 2025, WMSRDC was awarded funding through the Michigan DNRโ€™s Urban & Community Forestry Grant Program to conduct a tree inventory for the City of Muskegon. ๐ŸŒณ

The inventory helps better understand the value of Muskegonโ€™s public trees. The results show that trees provide economic, environmental, and public health benefitsโ€”while also helping improve safety across the community.

Please join us in giving a warm Muskegon welcome to our newest member of the department, Officer Nathan Welsh!

Officer Welsh was officially sworn in this morning in the City Hall chambers by Clerk Meisch, following a warm introduction and welcome from Director Kozal. In a time-honored tradition that symbolizes the deep support and sacrifice of law enforcement families, Officer Welshโ€™s dad had the distinct honor of pinning his new badge on him for the very first time.

He is incredibly excited to hit the ground running and serve our wonderful community.

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Fun Fact: When heโ€™s not protecting the community, Officer Welsh is mastering the chessboard. He currently ranks in the top 50,000 chess players worldwide! Talk about always being three moves ahead.

We are thrilled to have his dedication (and strategic mind) on our side. Next time you see Officer Welsh out on patrol, be sure to say hi or challenge him to a chess match!

Welcome aboard, Officer Welsh! ๐Ÿ‘ค

Looking forward to celebrating this historic summer season? ๐ŸŽ† The Muskegon Fire Department wants to make sure our neighborhoods stay safe.

If you plan to use consumer fireworks at home, please remember these critical local rules and safety steps:

๐Ÿ“ PRIVATE PROPERTY ONLY
It is strictly illegal to set off fireworks on public property. This includes city parks, streets, sidewalks, and all public beaches (like Pere Marquette). Violations carry a civil fine of up to $1,000.

๐Ÿ”ž AGE & SOBRIETY
You must be 18 or older to purchase or use consumer fireworks. Operating fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited.

๐Ÿถ PROTECT YOUR PETS
Loud noises terrify animals and lead to lost pets. Keep your dogs and cats safely indoors in a quiet, secure space.

๐Ÿ‘ถ WATCH THE KIDS
Never let young children handle fireworks or sparklers. Sparklers burn at over 2,000ยฐF and can cause severe burns instantly. Swap them for glowsticks instead!

๐Ÿ”ฅ CHECK THE FIRE RISK
Dry weather can trigger temporary burn restrictions or bans, which legally apply to fireworks. Always check the official daily conditions before you light anything.
