West Michigan skies have a way of surprising us!

This shot from SG Captures (.captures on Instagram) captured the Northern Lights wonderfully! A good reminder that when the conditions are just right, Muskegon County offers some of the best front-row seats to the aurora.

If you’re hoping to see some this spring and summer, here are a few tips:

• Time it right: Late night through the early morning is usually the sweet spot.
• Find the dark: Head to shoreline spots away from the city lights for the best views.
• Check the weather: You'll want clear skies and a high solar activity forecast.
• Use your lens: The colors often look like a faint mist to the eye, so try looking through your phone camera or taking a long-exposure photo to really see the glow.

Summer in Muskegon is full of these unexpected moments. It’s always worth looking up!

A quick bit of downtown Muskegon trivia for your next Friday night at Parties in the Park…

That clock tower overlooking Hackley Park sits on the former Hackley Administration Building. It’s currently being renovated into a boutique hotel and makes the backdrop for summer nights at the park even cooler!

When you’re enjoying the music, food, and good company, don’t forget to look up through the branches.
