Check out these photos some of our WMSRDC transportation staff took during a tour of the waterfront revitalization projects in Grand Rapids. It was a great chance to see ongoing progress and get a closer look at how these improvements are shaping the riverfront and surrounding community spaces.

Last week students from Twin Lake Elementary and Pennsylvania Elementary helped plant over 200 plants at the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve micro forest.
Students planted ground cover species to help establish a dense, biodiverse mini forest that will benefit the community for years to come.
This project was funded through a grant from the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, along with support from many local partners working to enhance green infrastructure and improve quality of life in our community!

Staff at WMSRDC recently visited the White Lake Community Library to install 4 non-motorized counters along the White Lake Pathway. These counters will help gauge pedestrian traffic in different areas of the pathway and provide valuable data for future planning efforts.

The counters do not take pictures or record personal information — they simply track movement by motion. Staff regularly monitor the counters to ensure they are working properly and collecting accurate data.

The West Michigan Clean Air Coalition gathered today at Johnson Park in Walker for a luncheon focused on regional air quality and environmental collaboration.

Attendees heard important updates from EGLE, GVMC, and WM Trails while discussing ongoing efforts to support cleaner air and healthier communities throughout West Michigan. 🌿

A public comment period is scheduled during the MPO Policy Committee Meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the office of the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC), 316 Morris Avenue, Suite 340, Muskegon. Meeting materials are available on the event calendar at www.wmsrdc.org

The Muskegon and Northern Ottawa County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which is responsible for transportation planning in the Muskegon and Northern Ottawa County area, is seeking public comment on the transportation planning process.

The planning process includes the 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan, Unified Work Program (UWP), Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Program of Projects (POP), the Fiscal Year 2026 – 2029 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and other agenda items.

The TIP is developed in a cooperative effort between federal, state, and local officials and serves as the final link in the transportation planning process. The primary purpose of the TIP is to identify transportation programs and projects to be funded with federal aid in accordance with federal law and regulations. This TIP is an outline of the transportation needs of Muskegon County and Northern Ottawa County for the next four years. The MTP looks at the MPO’s future transportation network with the intention of being used as a guideline for transportation investment. The FTA POP includes 5307 and 5308 funding categories for the Muskegon Area Transit System (MATS) and Harbor Transit. Recommendations for new construction, safety improvements, congestion (traffic) management, air quality, non-motorized, transit, planning, etc. will be accepted.

Our Environmental Program Manager, Fallon Chabala, recently participated in the Spring 2026 Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Sampling with the White River Watershed Partnership.

This long-standing effort helps monitor the health of streams throughout the watershed and provides critical insight into the water quality of the White River. Sampling twice each year allows partners to track changes over time and support the protection of this important natural resource. 🌿💧
