What does it mean to show up for your community?

Sometimes it means grabbing a pair of work gloves.
Sometimes it means sitting down and listening to a veteran tell their story.
Sometimes it means giving a few hours simply because something in your community needs to be done.

On Friday, September 25, we're giving Newaygo County three ways to show up during Day of Caring.

🌿 Camp Newaygo Wetland Trail
🎖️ Veterans History Project
🇺🇸 Veteran Headstone Cleaning

We'll provide breakfast, lunch, and the opportunity. You bring the willingness to help. United is the Way we show up.

Happy Labor Day from United Way of the Lakeshore! ❤️

Today, we celebrate the working people whose time, talent, and dedication help our communities thrive. From educators and first responders to skilled tradespeople, healthcare workers, service professionals, and so many others, every day you help keep the Lakeshore moving forward.

We’re especially grateful for our longstanding partnerships with organized labor and the working people who give back through volunteering, workplace campaigns, and service to their neighbors.

However you’re spending the holiday, we hope you have a safe and restful Labor Day. Thank you for all you do for our community!

When neighbors need a hand, our community shows up. ❤️

Families at Mona Lake Mobile Home Park continue navigating an unexpected transition following notice that the park is closing. Last Thursday, Public Health - Muskegon County brought organizations together for a resource event connecting residents with housing, moving, legal, school, senior, and other support.

United Way was proud to help through our Volunteer Center, and our neighbors answered the call. Within just a few hours, every volunteer spot needed for setup and tear down was filled! A huge thank-you to Public Health for leading this response and to every volunteer who stepped up to help.

We’re excited to welcome David Elliot as United Way of the Lakeshore’s new Volunteer Center Coordinator! Originally from Galesburg, Dave has called Fruitport home since 2010, where he lives with his wife and their seven children.

A Western Michigan University graduate with a degree in Education, Dave brings experience from the nonprofit human services field, including work with Kalamazoo Family and Children’s Services, Easter Seals Arc, and Hope Network. Service has remained a constant throughout his life. Dave has served as a firefighter and first responder, in youth ministry, nonprofit board member, and longtime youth sports coach, working with his own children and dozens of other young people over the years. When he’s not serving or volunteering, you’ll likely find him enjoying the outdoors, including hunting and other outdoor recreation.

Now, Dave is bringing that lifelong commitment to service to our Volunteer Center, helping connect neighbors across the Lakeshore with opportunities to give their time and talents. Please join us in giving Dave a warm United Way welcome!

Oceana County, we're ONE WEEK away! On September 11, we're trading our regular Friday routines for a day of service.

And there's still room for you.

Grab your coworkers. Bring your service club. Recruit your friends. Or simply sign yourself up and meet some new neighbors along the way.

Together, we'll:

🦅Preserve veterans' stories
🦅Care for veterans' headstones
🦅Build American Flag Retirement Boxes
And potentially take on additional projects as our volunteer team grows!

We'll kick things off with breakfast and morning stretches at the Oceana Council on Aging before heading out to our project sites. Lunch will also be delivered to volunteers at each site.

One week. One community. One meaningful way to remember through service. Register for Day of Caring https://www.unitedwaylakeshore.org/day-caring
