๐Ÿ“ฑ Keeping Your Kids Safe Online: What Parents Need to Know

Online predators use social media, gaming systems, and messaging apps to connect with children. Understanding how they operate is the first step in protecting your family.

๐Ÿ”น Many predators pretend to be kids to gain trust, often using fake profiles and stolen photos.
๐Ÿ”น Most situations begin with simple conversations. They build connections through compliments, attention, and shared interests.
๐Ÿ”น Video games and apps with chat or voice features can open the door for contact with strangers.
๐Ÿ”น The risk increases when conversations move to private messages, where behavior can quickly escalate.
๐Ÿ”น Kids who share personal detailsโ€”like where they go to school, their activities, or their locationโ€”can unknowingly make themselves targets.

Ways to Help Protect Your Child:

โœ” Stay aware of the apps, games, and platforms your child is using.
โœ” Set clear rules about adding or messaging new people.
โœ” Keep profiles private and disable location sharing whenever possible.
โœ” Talk to your kids about not sharing personal information or photos with people they donโ€™t know in real life.
โœ” Create an environment where they feel comfortable coming to you if something doesnโ€™t seem right.
โœ” Use parental controls and keep an eye on messages and interactions.
โœ” Make it clear: never meet someone in person that they only know online.

Protecting kids online starts with staying involved and having open, ongoing conversations. Awareness makes all the difference. ๐Ÿ’™

At last nights G.U.N.S meeting, a representative from Muskegon Violence Prevention (MVP) attended. She provided a flyer with information on completing a survey about gun violence and how it has affected the individual taking the survey. The survey is anonymous, and the information collected will be used to help effect change in the community and identify additional resources needed to make that change. MHPD encourages everyone to complete the survey, as gun violence has affected so many in our community.
