The Healing Place will be CLOSED today, Friday June 19th, in observance of Juneteenth. Read below for more information about Juneteenth and why it is vital that we celebrate and remember this important date in our history.

Today The Healing Place Recognizes Juneteenth as both a day of victory and a stark reminder of our country’s fractured history.

In 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX, to read Order No. 3, which affirmed the end of slavery in the states of the former Confederacy. This momentous occasion has been celebrated as — a combination of "June" and "19th" — for over 150 years.

Though President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1st, 1863, freed all enslaved people in the Confederacy, its announcement and enforcement relied upon the presence of Union troops, including members of the United States Colored Troops.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of ending slavery in the United States. Today, annual Juneteenth celebrations include family reunions, religious sermons, barbecues, and much more. Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation, and a promise of a brighter morning to come.

Lawlers exemplified service by donating their delicious barbeque and mac n cheese for our children and families to enjoy on group night. Special thank you to Lawlers Barbeque manager Haley Quillen for helping orchestrate this wonderful service.

We are so grateful for the continued support and help businesses and organizations in the area. Without their kindness and consideration The Healing Place could not continue to carry out our mission of providing grief support and education to children and families who have experienced the loss of a special person in their lives.

If you know a student or child has experienced a loss, reach out before the Father's Day activity. A private conversation describing the plan gives them a chance to prepare or ask for an alternative. Knowing they have a choice makes all the difference.

Preparation is key to supporting a grieving student- at summer school, summer camp, church events, etc. Download our full resource, 'Father’s Day May Not Be Easy for Some Grieving Students’, to help your school team identify at-risk students early. We encourage you to share this guide with your fellow educators, school mental health staff, and administrators to ensure a unified, compassionate approach.

🥧The Good Sport of the Month Award goes to Mrs. Lexie!🥧

💙THP kiddos had a little too much fun getting to pie Mrs. Lexie in the face! We encouraged them to help us fundraise for the Out of the Darkness Walk by allowing the person who raised the most money to pie Mrs. Lexie in the face after a group night. Mrs. Lexie opted to let our top TWO fundraisers pie her in the face as a surprise.

💙With their help THP raised over $500 for su***de prevention and awareness!

We need to extend a special thank you to the TVA volunteers who spent a day helping out at THP! They displayed service through providing hands on help with projects around the facility that allows THP to create a warm and welcoming environment for every child and family that visits our facility. Without the kindness and support of TVA, and so many others, THP could not continue to provide grief support and education to children and families who have experienced a loss.💙
