City Leaders Ask Residents to Comply with Mandatory Evacuations

Precautionary Inspections on E. 2nd Street are Ongoing

Muscatine, Iowa (June 23, 2026) - The City of Muscatine is asking all residents in the 200 block of E. 2nd Street to comply with the mandatory evacuation put in place last week as a precautionary measure.

Starting on Tuesday, June 23 at 5 p.m. the Muscatine Police Department will be patrolling the area to ensure no one enters the buildings. City leaders will work with landlords and tenants to schedule a time for them to collect any personal items from the property. The safety of the tenants is the City’s top priority and once a building is considered safe, the City will allow residents back in.

On June 13, a structural engineer deemed two buildings, already slated for demolition, unsafe after an exterior wall at 203 East 2nd Street partially collapsed onto the roof of 201 East 2nd Street. Due to the unexpected movement of other nearby buildings on the block, the City initiated evacuations and inspections for all buildings with residential occupants. To date:

• 20 buildings have been impacted.
• Of the 20, three have been determined to be safe.
• 36 apartment units and 18 businesses continue to be evacuated.

Additionally, on Tuesday, the City launched a new webpage with resources for residents and businesses impacted. The page will also house important updates regarding the inspection process. You can access the webpage at www.muscatineiowa.gov.

East 2nd Street Demolition

The City of Muscatine is taking steps to evacuate all buildings on the north side of the 200 block of East 2nd Street due to conditions observed during additional inspections. This evaluation was conducted as part of the process to determine how to safely proceed with the demolition of 201 and 203 East 2nd Street, which continued to move necessitating further investigation of conditions in additional buildings.

Following this inspection, the structural engineer deemed the buildings unsafe to occupy at this time and recommend they be vacated to ensure the safety of all residents, workers and patrons. City staff will continue to work with a team of building professionals and the property owners to determine the safest path forward.

The City previously awarded a contract for the demolition of 201 East 2nd Street, and the contractor had been working to stabilize the shared wall with 203 East 2nd Street. On Saturday, June 13th, 2026, the Muscatine Fire Department responded to a report of a possible fire at the site. While no fire was found, firefighters discovered that a foundation failure caused a portion of the 203 roof to collapse onto 201. The demolition contractor was immediately notified and responded to assess the situation. To maintain public safety additional road closures were implemented.

East 2nd Street, including the Sycamore Street intersection, will remain closed except to authorized persons. Public safety continues to be the City’s highest priority, and the timeline for demolition and stabilization will depend on conditions identified during ongoing evaluations.

The City of Muscatine appreciates the public’s continued patience and cooperation as crews continue this complex work. The community is asked to respect the street closure, maintain safe distances, and continue supporting downtown businesses throughout this process.

The City of Muscatine continues to actively monitor conditions on East 2nd Street following additional structural movement observed this week in the buildings located at 201 and 203 East 2nd Street. Conditions remain dynamic, and, out of an abundance of caution, the City has maintained all safety measures and worked with nearby property owners to evacuate additional apartments. City staff are working closely with structural engineers to determine the safest and most preservation-minded path forward.

The City previously awarded a contract for the demolition of 201 East 2nd Street, and the contractor had been working to stabilize the shared wall between 201 and 203 East 2nd Street. On Saturday, June 13th, the Muscatine Fire Department responded to a report of a possible fire at the site. East 2nd Street remains temporarily closed to all traffic except authorized personnel, including the demolition contractor, structural engineers, utility crews, public safety personnel, and involved City staff. Public safety continues to be the City's highest priority.

Throughout the week, engineers and the contractor have continued monitoring the buildings and evaluating options to safely proceed while preserving as much of Muscatine's historic building stock as possible. Demolition activities will resume once revised engineering guidance is available. The timeline for demolition and stabilization efforts will depend on conditions identified during ongoing evaluations.

The City of Muscatine appreciates the public's continued patience and cooperation as crews work through this complex situation. Community members are asked to respect the street closure, maintain a safe distance from the area, and continue supporting downtown businesses during this period.
