Muscatine Firefighters — past and present — joined city staff and community members early Monday morning to honor Firefighter Michael Kruse, the only active‑duty loss in Muscatine Fire Department history.

A moment of silence and a wreath‑laying ceremony were held at the Muscatine Firefighters Memorial to mark the 24th anniversary of the end of his watch, September 14, 2002.

We remember his service, his sacrifice, and the lasting impact he made on the Muscatine community.

MPW announces lane closure for water main break

Update 7 pm: Crews are reporting the main break is fixed! Water in the hydrants is starting to clear up and crews will stay out until the holes is backfilled and water is fully cleared up. Concrete will be poured as soon as contractor is available. Thank you for your patience!

Update 5 pm: crews are still excavating to start the repair. We apologize for the extended period to resolve this, the mains in the area are large and move a lot of water, so the impact is pretty widespread.
Extra hydrants have been opened to try to clear the water.

Traffic Alert:

A water main break has been confirmed on E. 2nd Street near HNI. MPW crews are on site and setting up for repairs. To safely complete the work, the eastbound lane of E. 2nd Street will be closed. Please use caution when traveling through the area and expect potential delays.

This post will be updated as more information becomes available.

A friendly rivalry got a full‑on riverfront glow‑up Friday as City Administrator Matt Mardesen fired up a tailgate worthy of the Iowa‑Iowa State showdown. City of Muscatine staff rolled in wearing black‑and‑gold or cardinal‑and‑gold, parking their pride right next to coworkers on the “other” side.

Between burgers, laughs, and plenty of good‑natured smack talk, Cyclone and Hawkeye fans swapped bold predictions, dramatic reenactments of past games, and a few “we’ll see about that” side‑eye moments.

It’s the second year Mardesen has hosted the pre‑game tailgate — and once again, Muscatine proved that even the fiercest rivalry can be all fun, all friendly, and all community.
