The Calloway County Office of Emergency Management will conduct a quarterly test of tornado warning sirens in Murray, Hazel, and on the Murray State University campus on Friday, September 4, at approximately 9:00 a.m.

The test will begin with the Murray State University siren systems, which produce both an audible tone and a spoken announcement. The City of Murray sirens will be tested next. The first sounding will be a wavering siren, representing the “alert” or “warning” tone. This will be followed by a steady siren tone indicating “all clear.” The City of Hazel sirens will be tested last. These sirens will also sound the warning tone followed by the all-clear tone.

Tornado warning sirens are activated when the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning that includes the cities of Murray or Hazel. Quarterly testing allows emergency management officials to verify the proper operation of each siren under controlled conditions, which can be difficult to assess during an actual severe weather event. The sirens are tested once each quarter in accordance with National Weather Service guidelines and the Calloway County Emergency Operations Plan.

If threatening severe weather conditions are present Friday morning, the siren test will be postponed to a fair-weather day. The current forecast calls for clear weather at the scheduled test time.

Residents are reminded that outdoor warning sirens are only one part of the community's warning system. Everyone is encouraged to have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts and to remain prepared to take shelter when a warning is issued. Residents who have not yet registered for Calloway County's Hyper-Reach emergency alerting system are encouraged to do so. Registration is available on the county website at www.callowaycountyky.gov.

At the Calloway County Jail, we believe that accountability and rehabilitation can go hand in hand. Providing meaningful opportunities for education, personal growth, and skill development is an important part of helping individuals make positive changes and prepare for a better future.

When Programs Coordinator Deputy Jessica Childs began working at our facility in 2021, the Calloway County Jail offered just two DOC-accredited programs. Through her dedication, continued training, and commitment to expanding her knowledge and expertise, that small foundation has grown into a comprehensive programming initiative focused on rehabilitation, accountability, education, and long-term success.

📚 Growing Opportunities -
2021: We began with 2 DOC-accredited programs and expanded to 6 accredited programs by the end of the year.

2023: We added "MRT Mentor" and "Trauma" Programs, bringing our total to 8 DOC-accredited programs.

2026: We added an "Employment Readiness Program", bringing us to 9 DOC-accredited programs. This year also brought an important advancement in accessibility through the introduction of virtual programming. This allows classified state inmates — both male and female — to participate in approved programming together, via Zoom, regardless of their housing location. This is a significant step toward reaching more individuals and providing greater access to opportunities for positive change.

📈 JANUARY 2026 - AUGUST 2026 STATS:
90-day programs – 128 = $128,000
60-day programs – 82 = $49,200
Total of 210 Program Completions = $177,200

This includes 331 program sessions taught by Deputy Childs.

Even more importantly, this represents an increase over the same period last year.
January 2025 – August 2025: $157,000
January 2026 – August 2026: $177,200
That's a total increase of $20,200 in revenue – with virtual programming contributing directly to that additional revenue by allowing more eligible inmates to participate. Expanded programming provides opportunities for positive change while also generating revenue that helps offset the cost of operating our facility — ultimately helping save taxpayer dollars.

Behind every program is a staff member willing to invest time, knowledge, and encouragement into helping someone move forward. Our staff understands that rehabilitation isn't simply about completing a program — it's about providing individuals with tools they can use to make better decisions, develop healthier habits, strengthen their skills, and prepare for life beyond incarceration.
Calloway County Jail is proud of the progress our programs have made, and we are committed to continuing to expand opportunities, strengthen support, and provide meaningful pathways toward positive change. Together, we are working to build stronger individuals, stronger families, and a stronger community — one opportunity at a time.

Attention all young visual artists in Kentucky! 🎨

It's time for KACo's annual I Love My County Art Contest.

Students in grades K-8 are invited to draw, paint or create original artwork showing what they love most about their county. It might be a favorite quiet spot or hangout, a local event or anything that they feel makes their county unique and a special place to call home.

We are accepting entries until Oct. 16.

Help us spread the word by sharing with local schools, teachers and all Kentucky students in kindergarten through 8th grade.

-For Immediate Release-

To***co Road will be closed to thru traffic periodically at different times during the month of September for major roadwork between the two bridges. Residents on To***co Road will be able to access their respective homes either from old 641 (KY-2547)to the first bridge or from Old Murray-Paris Rd (KY 1497) to the eastern bridge. Work should be started Sept 1st, Tuesday.
We apologize for the inconvenience but hopefully in will help during the future flooding events.
It will be day by day closures as needed to complete the projects but the ‘Closed’ sign mean to can’t drive thru the bottoms during the construction phases.
