On 5/23/2026 at 3:49 AM, the Murray Police Department responded to a residence on the south side of Murray in reference to a report of a shooting. Officers responded and determined that no one had been injured. Through investigation, officers learned that Vi Jay Hill (25) of Murray, KY was at the residence and had started shooting a firearm at an individual in the residence and fled the area. Additionally, there were three other individuals inside the residence nearby when the shooting occurred. Mr. Hill was located by deputies of the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office. As a result of the investigation, the Murray Police Department arrested and charged Mr. Hill with Attempted Murder and three counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree.
The Murray Police Department would like to remind everyone that any person charged with a criminal offense is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On 5/19/2026, the Murray Police Department received information of possible criminal activity involving a member of the department. On the same date, the Murray Police Department requested that the Kentucky State Police conduct a criminal investigation into the allegations. An internal administrative investigation was also initiated by the Murray Police Department. Before the internal investigation was concluded, on 5/20/2026, Sgt. Justin Swope was arrested by the Kentucky State Police. Swope subsequently resigned from the Murray Police Department. All further inquiries should be referred to the Kentucky State Police.

This dapper gentleman is Chance. He belongs to Detective Winebarger and has been reporting to the PD for the last few weeks. He is the goodest boy and spends his time napping and visiting different offices. He always willing to accept pets, and will absolutely make you feel better if you’re having a bad day. Please join us in congratulating Sergeant Williams for graduating from the Academy of Police Supervision. This is a three week course where attendees learn to apply situational leadership and demonstrate an understanding of constitutional and administrative law, emotional and social intelligence, change, ethical decision making, problem solving, emotional survival, and public speaking into their role as a supervisor. We are excited to have him back.
