The Calloway County Office of Emergency Management plans to test the tornado warning sirens in Murray, Hazel and on the Murray State University campus on Wednesday morning, March 4th, at about 9:07 a.m. This test will coincide with the statewide tornado drill scheduled for the same date and time. This will be a great opportunity to practice your tornado safety plan, whether you are at home, school, or work. If there is a threat of severe weather at the scheduled time, the drill will be postponed to a fair-weather day.

The sirens are sounded whenever the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning that includes the cities of Murray or Hazel. These tests will allow officials to more accurately determine the proper functioning of each siren, which is difficult to do under actual threat conditions. The sirens are tested once each quarter, in accordance with National Weather Service guidelines and the County Emergency Plan.

It is wise to always be alert and prepared. If you have not yet registered for the County's Hyper-Reach alerting system, this would be a good opportunity to do so by going to https://hyper-reach.com/kycallowaysignup.html.

You can find more information on the statewide tornado drill by visiting https://www.weather.gov/lmk/KentuckyTornadoDrill.

📱 Calloway County, KY E-911 Communications Center Launches Text-to-911 Service 📱

Beginning January 8, the Calloway County E-911 Communication Center launched a new Text-to-911 service, giving residents another way to reach emergency responders when making a phone call isn’t safe or possible.

How it works:
If you cannot safely make a voice call due to a medical emergency, a dangerous situation, a hearing impairment, or another reason, you can now text 911 directly from your mobile phone to request help.

Important tips to remember:

• Text 911 only when you cannot make a verbal call — calling 911 is still the fastest way to get help.

• Be sure to include your exact location, the type of emergency, and any important details about what is happening.

This service is now live and ready to help keep our families and community safer. Please share this post so everyone in Calloway County is aware of this lifesaving resource.

📍Disabled Vehicles:
If your vehicle becomes stuck or disabled and you are able to get a ride to your destination, you MUST contact us at 270-753-3151 before leaving your vehicle.
• If the vehicle is clear of the travel portion of the roadway, we will record your name, contact information, and vehicle details. You may then make your own arrangements to retrieve the vehicle.
• If the vehicle is blocking any portion of the roadway, it must be removed as soon as possible. You may contact a towing company of your choosing, or we can contact one for you.
• Any unoccupied vehicles located in the roadway will be removed by a towing company from our rotating wrecker list.

‼️Reasons NOT to call 911 or the Sheriff’s Office:

📌• To ask about road conditions:
Temperatures are not forecasted to rise above freezing until at least next Tuesday. Roads will remain slick and hazardous. (More information below.) Please stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Calloway County Office of Emergency Management in coordination with Murray State University is establishing a warming center at Racer Arena located at 333 N 14th Street on the Murray State University campus. The entrance will be located on the south side of the building.

The warming center is being established due to the forecast of dangerously cold temperatures for the area this weekend. The warming center will open at 6:00pm on Saturday December 13th. Updates will be provided on hours of operation depending on occupancy. Continue to monitor our social media account for these updates.

A warming center is different than a warming shelter. Warming centers are a warm place to occupy temporarily. Cots, bedding, food and beverage will not be provided.

Everyone is encouraged to prepare before the arrival of these extremely cold temperatures. Ensure proper ventilation and use carbon monoxide detectors when using gas heating/generators. When using individual electrical heaters, ensure not to overload the circuits and do not use electrical extension cords. As always, keep flammable items away from heaters and heating elements.

To stay informed of weather-related issues, continue to monitor the Calloway County Office of Emergency Management page or the US National Weather Service Paducah Kentucky.
