On January 16th, 2026, at approximately 21:30 Valleytown VFD requested an all county response for tankers due to a large commercial agriculture structure fire. Wolf Creek Fire & Rescue Department along with 11 other county departments and out of county departments responded without hesitation to assist.

Wolf Creek Fire & Rescue Department provided Tanker 23 and supplied 18,000 gallons of water total.

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

With the catastrophic events that have hit our region, we in Cherokee County are blessed to have safety and well-being in such times. With that said, Wolf Creek Fire Department has been brainstorming how we can take action and help. Today 10/02/2024 Captain Brewer made contact with an individual in south Avery County (NC), She is a Point-Of-Contact (POC) for the area that has been cut off from the outside world. They are working with many rural fire departments around the clock to rescue, locate, and provide for their isolated communities. When asked what they need/can use she stated “Anything, we have no water, fuel, mixed fuel, etc. We need trained Swift Water personnel for water ops, and the list goes on…” The tone of defeat in her voice was bone chilling. With further conversation I reassured her that help will be on the way.

With that said, Wolf Creek Fire Department is asking our community to help with donations of: Mixed Fuel (For chainsaws)
Bar Oil
Cases of water
MRE like food
Along with long socks and other misc items for first responders to perform their duties to their communities.

We will be meeting at the station (18835 US-74, Murphy, NC 28906), at 09:30a.m. on Saturday 10/05/2024. To discuss further plans in moving these items to those who need them.

Any questions please message on Facebook.

Further information is to follow.

Respectfully,

Capt. Brewer 2303

God bless all of you! From all of us here at Wolf Creek Fire & Rescue Dept. - St. 23, our deepest condolences go out to the department, the community, his friends and family.

Sad day. We learned this morning we lost Firefighter Ethan Hedrick in a vehicle collision. Ethan joined as a junior but has been around the department with his dad since he was a baby. He was a fourth generation firefighter following his great grandpa, his grandpa and his daddy into the department. This is a great loss to our department, our community and most of all his family. Please remember his family in your thoughts and prayers.

On behalf of Wolf Creek Fire & Rescue Dept. - St. 23, we’d like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family in our neighboring state from the structure fire this morning.
Thank you to our members and to the many people who support us on any scene and for your hard work.
Our department was paged for automatic aid to assist CopperBasin Fire and Rescue and we had a great response.
Thank you again to all of you!
Eric Curtis, Chief Wolfcreek Fire Department
