As the Assessor of Property in Rutherford County, I have always been committed to ensuring that our citizens' personal information is protected and handled with the utmost care and integrity. The recent breach of National Public Data, which reportedly exposed the personally identifiable information (PII) of up to 292 million individuals, is deeply concerning. This breach represents not only a significant failure in data security but also a potential threat to the financial well-being of countless Americans, including residents of our county.
Given the scale and severity of this breach, I strongly believe that the Tennessee Attorney General should initiate an investigation. The possibility that Social Security Numbers and other sensitive data have been compromised on such a massive scale is alarming. This incident underscores the importance of robust data protection measures and the need for accountability from those who are entrusted with our personal information.
For Rutherford County, the implications of this breach cannot be understated. Our citizens could be among the millions affected, potentially facing identity theft, fraud, and other financial crimes. Moreover, any local businesses or institutions that relied on National Public Data for background checks or fraud prevention may also find themselves at risk, further impacting our community.
The lack of timely notification and transparency from National Public Data is particularly troubling. Tennessee has strong consumer protection laws, and if these were violated, we must ensure that those responsible are held accountable. An investigation by the Tennessee Attorney General would not only safeguard our citizens but also reinforce the principle that companies handling sensitive information must adhere to the highest standards of security and integrity.
As we work to make Rutherford County the best place to live and work in America, it is imperative that we take every possible step to protect the personal information of our residents. I stand ready to support any efforts by the Attorney General to investigate this matter fully and to take the necessary actions to ensure that such a breach never happens again.
Together, we can protect the people of Rutherford County and uphold the trust that they place in us as their public servants.
