Tangible Personal Property Schedules are to filed on or before March 1, each year, as provided by TCA 67-5-903. Every business is to file a schedule each year.
Report all personal property owned and used by you, or held for use in your business or profession as of January 1, including items fully depreciated on your accounting records. Do not report inventory held for sale or exchange or finished goods in the hands of manufacturer.
Personal Property equipment leased or rented and used in your business must be reported in Part III of the schedule. If you have multiple businesses you will have to file separately for each location.
If a business neglects to complete and return a Tangible Personal Property Schedule to the Rutherford County Assessor of Property by March 1, the Assessor is required by law to place a value (forced assessment) on the business. Failure to file a schedule will subject the taxpayer to a penalty.
If your business has closed and you receive a schedule you still need to file the schedule noting the date of closure. If the business was sold you need to make the Assessor aware of whom the business was sold to and the date of sale.
