Did you know Humane World for Animals operates a sanctuary in Liberia that provides lifelong care for dozens of chimpanzees, many of whom were previously subjected to invasive research? Today, the dedicated caregivers at Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia work tirelessly to provide exceptional care, enriching environments, and compassionate support to the chimpanzees who call the sanctuary home.

Their commitment helps these resilient individuals heal and thrive after difficult beginnings. To learn more about the remarkable care provided at the refuge, be sure to check out the Humane World blog.

Chimpanzees at our sanctuary now live in safety and receive the specialized care they deserve.

Before some much-needed rain rolled in overnight, our bison herd was making the most of one of the many dirt wallows in their pasture. After a good roll in the dust, they were clearly feeling energized, taking off together and frolicking across the pasture as a herd. 🦬

At Black Beauty Ranch, part of our commitment to helping animals thrive is providing habitats that allow them to express their natural behaviors. For bison and other hoofstock, dust wallows are much more than a favorite pastime. The dirt helps deter pests such as ticks and lice, aids in shedding seasonal coats, soothes dry, itchy skin, and even assists with temperature regulation during warm weather.

Watching the bison roll, kick up dust, and race across the pasture is a great reminder that sometimes the simplest natural behaviors are essential for an animal's health and well-being. 💗

Juniper is getting ready for her next haircut! Our sheep will soon receive their second shearing of the year, helping them stay comfortable during the Texas heat while giving their wool plenty of time to grow back before winter. By the time cooler temperatures arrive, they'll have a thick, cozy coat ready to keep them warm.

With her fluffy fleece soon to be trimmed, Juniper will be ready to enjoy the warm days ahead in comfort while growing a fresh new wool coat for the cooler months to come.

Lady was once forced into a life that supported the misleading “teacup” pig industry, bred repeatedly so her piglets could be sold as “teacup” or “mini” pigs. In reality, healthy potbellied pigs can grow to weigh well over 120 pounds.

Thankfully, Lady's story took a happy turn five years ago when she gained her freedom and was given the chance to simply be a pig. Today, she is no longer forced into anything and gets to make her own choices about how she spends her days. More often than not, that includes enjoying plenty of attention from her compassionate caregivers, especially her favorite pastime – daily belly scratches. 💜

Jackie is showing off her inquisitive nature! Capuchins are highly intelligent and naturally curious primates that thrive on exploring and interacting with their surroundings. While Jackie has plenty of opportunities to engage with her natural habitat, her dedicated care team also provides a variety of enrichment activities each day to keep her active mind challenged and engaged. Here, Jackie appears hard at work trying to combine two enrichment items into something entirely new. Moments like these highlight the problem-solving skills and creativity that make capuchins such fascinating animals. 🙂

Shrek is a true testament to the patience, compassion, and dedication of our Equine team. 💚 Once considered a “feral” donkey, he was happiest keeping his distance and roaming his pasture far from his caregivers. Through consistent kindness and understanding, the team slowly earned his trust. Today, Shrek has come full circle. Not only does he accept back scratches from his caregivers, but he craves them! Stories like Shrek’s are only possible because of patience, expert care, and unwavering dedication. 🥰

Spike, our male red deer, is almost finished shedding his velvet, marking an important stage in his annual antler growth cycle. Velvet is a soft, blood-rich membrane that covers growing antlers, supplying the oxygen and minerals needed for the rapid development of bone. Once the antlers have fully developed, rising testosterone levels cause the blood supply to the velvet to be cut off. As a result, the velvet begins to dry out and peel away. To help remove it, deer naturally rub and thrash their antlers against trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.

Fortunately, Spike has plenty of opportunities to engage in this natural behavior within his 40-acre pasture, which is filled with trees and vegetation that help him complete the shedding process. Before long, his fully hardened antlers will be on display.

🐐 honors one of the oldest domesticated animals in the world. Goats play an important role in protecting the environment by naturally clearing invasive weeds and dense brush, reducing the need for toxic chemicals and helping lower wildfire risks.

At Black Beauty Ranch, our goats are much more than hardworking landscapers. They brighten our days with their playful antics, curious nature, and unique personalities. We know firsthand that every goat brings something special to the group, creating a well-rounded and vibrant herd.

Emmitt and Momoa are perfect examples. Rescued together, these two formed a strong friendship that has only grown over the years. Their bond remains as close as ever, and you'll almost always find them side by side in their pasture, enjoying each other's company. 💙
