Jackson County Office of the Sheriff Warns Residents About Jury Duty and Law Enforcement Impersonation Scams

The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff is warning residents to remain vigilant after a recent scam targeted a local elementary school teacher. The victim received a phone call from an individual falsely claiming to be a Sheriff’s Office employee using the name “Sgt. Matthews.” The caller stated the victim had missed jury duty and demanded immediate payment of $6,000 to avoid the issuance of a felony warrant. During the call, the scammer appeared knowledgeable about personal information and later sent a photograph containing a QR code with instructions for payment.

Scammers often use fear, urgency, and publicly available information to convince victims that the threat is legitimate. Personal details such as addresses, family information, employment history, and phone numbers can frequently be found through internet searches, social media accounts, and publicly available records. Criminals use this information to create a false sense of credibility and pressure victims into making immediate payments.
