Thank you to everyone who attended our Tree Sale this year. It may not seem like much, but by adding native plants to your yard over nonnative plants, you are helping to create more habitat for our native wildlife. Even something small can make a huge difference over time. So thank you, and we hope to see you again next year.

What do you think is a good indicator of a quality stream? If you said bugs, you are correct. Certain types of bugs or macroinvertebrates are more or less tolerant of water quality, so depending on which macroinvertebrates you find and how many, you can get a clear understanding of the water quality of that stream.

Help us monitor the streams this spring. This event is fun for the whole family. We will start by collecting our samples by wading through the stream. Next, we sort and identify the macroinvertebrates we found. And finally, we can come to a conclusion about the quality of the stream. This is a great opportunity to participate in some citizen science projects, or just a great excuse to play with some bugs in the water.

Keep your eyes peeled tonight for the Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower!

This shower comes every year, typically active between April 19th and May 28th. The shower occurs when the Earth travels through the debris trail of Halley's Comet. Halley's was last seen in 1986 and will be seen next in 2061, but we pass through its debris trail twice every year.

The Eta Aquariid will be best seen in the Southern Hemisphere, but should still be viewable in the Northern Hemisphere when skies are clear. You can expect to see about 10-30 meteors per hour at its peak. Meteors will appear to come from the area near the brightest star in the Aquarius constellation.

🦈Native Species Spotlight 🦈

Lake Sturgeon are one of the Great Lakes' most beloved creatures. How often do you find a fish that looks like a dinosaur and lives to 150 years old? This living fossil first appeared in the fossil record 150 million years ago. Modern day lake sturgeon barely differ from their prehistoric ancestors. Lake sturgeon have a long lifespan, often reaching 50 years for males and 80 years for females. This means it takes them a long time to reach sexual maturity, about 15 years for males and 25 years for females. But once they have reached sexual maturity, a female can lay 4,000-7,000 eggs per pound of fish.

Lake sturgeon were once so abundant in the Great Lakes that they were considered a nuisance species. Fishermen were encouraged to remove as many sturgeon as they could, even without any economic purpose. Eventually, by the mid 1800s, they discovered an economic benefit to harvesting sturgeon. Their fat was used as fuel for steamships, their swim bladders were used in making wine and beer, and their eggs were sold as caviar. This caused the sturgeon population to be overharvested, their population is now only 1% of what it once was. Today, harvesting lake sturgeon is highly regulated, yet their population is still incredibly low. That is because much of their historic spawning sites, river beds that feed into the Great Lakes, have been compromised. Some have dams in place, pollution, or soil erosion that make it impossible for lake sturegon to properly reproduce.
