Housing assistance and residential programs

At YWCA Central Indiana, we provide housing support and essential services to help women and children build a path toward stability.

Housing admissions take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need support outside of these hours, call Indiana 211 to connect with a navigator for local resources.

Residential programs include:

• C.O.T.S. Stay Program – A complimentary overnight shelter from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., offering a safe sleeping option, showers, hygiene products, food, and clothing.

• Emergency Shelter – A 45-day program with wraparound services for women and children in crisis.

• Second Stage Housing – Long-term housing for eligible women and women with children who need additional support.

• Permanent Housing Support & Advocacy – Helping individuals secure stable, long-term housing.

• Each month, YWCA Central Indiana offers programs to help emergency shelter residents with financial literacy, housing education, to***co awareness, diabetes education, and professional development, including resume building and interview skills.

If you or someone you know needs safe housing and support, YWCA Central Indiana is here to help. Call during business hours for assistance, or dial 211 for after-hours support.

Power outages. Water damage. Run-down appliances. Negligent landlords. Common themes for women facing homelessness.

Sandy found herself evicted from her apartment after the property owner defaulted on the loan and the building was shut down.

“Everyone who lived there got evicted,” Sandy explained. “I didn’t have any way of moving. I didn’t have anybody who could help me.”

After endless rejected phone calls and moving from place to place with cardboard boxes full of her belongings, the reality of her situation caught up with her.

Sandy reluctantly came to the YWCA for emergency shelter.

“I didn’t want to live in a homeless shelter. It’s scary. I couldn’t believe this was my situation. I couldn’t believe I was homeless at 48. That’s really scary.”

She recalled her first night at the YWCA.

“That first night, I was so scared. I was uneasy about living here. Then the woman working at the desk came to check on me because she noticed how upset I was. That made me feel better. It was cool to know someone cared.”

With the comfort of knowing she mattered to the YWCA staff, Sandy began focusing on building skills that would help her regain independence.

Sandy set a goal to focus on her mental health and reclaim her confidence.

“I do have low self-esteem. I always have because of family always saying things like, ‘You’ll amount to nothing.’”

The YWCA connected Sandy with local community and social services to help her rebuild her life.

With a home on the horizon and support from YWCA residents and staff helping her rise above fear and anxiety, Sandy has continued pushing toward even bigger goals.

When asked what she wants most, her answer is simple: more time with her kids.

“That’s the biggest thing. Even though they’re grown, when my kids come to visit me, I want them to be proud.”
