A DAY THAT ALMOST CHANGED THE HISTORY OF THE HAMLET OF MUMFORD

At 15:03 hours on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, the Mumford Fire Department was dispatched to Burnwell Propane, 1104 Main Street, for an explosion and fire.

Firefighters arrived to find the building fully involved.

What followed became one of the largest and one of the most demanding incidents in Mumford Fire Department history.

The massive fire pushed the municipal water supply to its limits. Firefighters stretched more than 5,000 feet of large-diameter hose (LDH) and used an estimated 2 million gallons of water during the operation.

To maintain the flow, crews established multiple drafting operations and a tanker shuttle.

The response soon expanded into a multi-county operation.

๐Ÿš’ More than 70 emergency units from Monroe, Livingston, and Genesee Counties responded.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’ More than 300 emergency responders ultimately worked at the scene.

For those on the front lines, this was far more than another call. It was a fire that threatened a major part of the communityโ€”and a day that could have forever changed the Hamlet of Mumford.

Today, we honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The countless firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and civilians who answered the call that day.

On 9/11/2001, our members were driving home our old Tanker 4717, bringing it back to the firehouse. That same tanker has served us until this year, when we just replaced it.

๐Ÿšจ REMEMBERING A TRAILBLAZER: JUNE โ€œFIREBELLEโ€ DAVIS ๐Ÿšจ

In 1966, June Davis became the FIRST FEMALE volunteer member of a fire department in Monroe County.

As the voice of the Mumford Fire Department, June answered calls and supported firefighters through her work in the radio room. For more than a decade, she also authored โ€œThe Olde Firebelleโ€ in The Caledonia Advertiser, documenting local fire service stories and preserving its history.

June passed away in 2021, but her legacy lives on. Her dedication helped pave the way for future generations of women in the fire service.

We proudly remember June as a true pioneer of the Mumford Fire Department and Monroe County fire service.

โš ๏ธ SEVERE WEATHER ALERT โš ๏ธ

With the incoming weather, strong/ damaging winds and large hail are possible. A Tornado Warning has also been issued.

๐Ÿšจ TAKE SHELTER NOW! ๐Ÿšจ

If you are in the warned area:
โ€ข Move to the basement if available.
โ€ข If you do not have a basement, go to a small, interior room on the lowest level of your home.
โ€ข Stay away from windows and exterior walls.
โ€ข Do not go outside to watch the storm.
โ€ข Keep your phone nearby and monitor local emergency alerts.

Do not wait until you see a tornado. Seek shelter immediately when a warning is issued.

Stay safe and take this weather seriously! ๐ŸŒช๏ธโš ๏ธ

There has been a recent spotlight on the decline of membership throughout the fire service. The reality is simple: the fire service relies on the next generation to step up and continue providing for our communities.

Thatโ€™s why the Mumford Fire Department developed the RAMS Program, designed for youth ages 14โ€“17.

RAMS members learn the basics of the fire service while gaining hands-on experience and the opportunity to respond to calls alongside our members.

This isnโ€™t just about learning how to be a firefighter. Itโ€™s about building confidence, learning teamwork, serving your neighbors, and becoming the next generation of community leaders.

๐Ÿš’ This is your community. Step up. Get involved. Lead.

Monday night was all about getting familiar with the new tanker! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ’ง

Our members spent the evening training on pump operations and reviewing the tankerโ€™s primary purpose โ€” hauling and quickly delivering large amounts of water.

This tanker can dump 3,000 gallons of water in under one minute using both the side and rear discharge! ๐ŸŒŠ

Interested in becoming part of the team? Stop down any Monday night and pick up an application!

Come see what weโ€™re all about and be part of your local fire department. ๐Ÿš’
