Ebikes and EScooters are ILLEGAL for children under the age of 15. We have seen the tragedy in various jurisdictions that arises from young people operating these machines.
If the child is 15 or older, they must have a valid license to operate an ebike/escooter, and the bike or scooter must be properly registered and insured.
Parents, please have safety discussions with your children to ensure they are operating their non-ebikes or scooters in a safe and courteous manner and please make sure your children are wearing helmets at all times. Similarly, we encourage all motorists to always be on the lookout for bicyclists and pedestrians alike while driving.

Although it may not seem as though Spring is around the corner, we would like to share an important update regarding e-bike and e-scooter laws.

In the interest of the safety of your children and our community, please be advised that the laws have recently changed. Individuals under the age of 15 are not permitted to operate an e-bike or e-scooter. In addition, anyone 15 years of age or older must possess a valid license to operate an e-bike or e-scooter.

We appreciate your anticipated cooperation in helping to keep everyone safe and ensuring compliance with these updated regulations.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Due to the anticipated heavy snowfall this weekend, overnight parking permission will not be granted starting Saturday. It is crucial that you make arrangements to park your vehicles off the roadways.

Vehicles Remaining on Roadways: Any vehicles left on the roadways may be towed or removed by the police. This action is necessary to facilitate snow removal operations and ensure the roads are cleared curb to curb.

Now is the time to prepare for the expected weather.

Fuel Your Vehicles: Make sure your vehicles are fully fueled, including any portable gas containers you may need for equipment.

Check for Hazards: Be vigilant of weighted tree branches that may be at risk of falling due to the snow. This is especially important in areas with heavy tree cover.

Caution with Snow Equipment: If you are using snow blowers or other snow removal equipment, please exercise caution to avoid accidents or injuries. Don't over do it while shoveling.

As we enter the holiday season, we extend our warmest wishes for a safe, peaceful, and joyful time with family and friends. This season is both celebration and reflection, but it is also a time when safety deserves our full attention.

If you are traveling, please plan ahead, drive responsibly, and never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Buckle up, reduce your speed, and remain alert to changing weather conditions. If you are hosting gatherings, please ensure your guests have a safe way home.

Remember to secure your homes and vehicles—lock doors, safeguard deliveries, leave lights on, and report any suspicious activity. Small precautions can make a significant difference.

Our officers and dispatchers will be on duty throughout the holidays, supported by our dedicated volunteer fire and EMS personnel, all ready to respond whenever needed. Together, they work tirelessly to keep our community safe.

We are proud to serve you and sincerely grateful for your continued support. Please take a moment to thank all those who serve during the holidays—hospital staff, utility workers, transit operators, and countless others whose steady commitment keeps our community running smoothly.

Their dedication and sacrifice allow us all to enjoy this season in peace and safety.

From all of us at the Mountainside Police Department, we wish you a happy holiday season and a safe, prosperous New Year.”

A smart plug is a simple and effective way to control lamps and small appliances from anywhere using an app or voice assistant, and it can definitely help your home look occupied as a crime prevention measure. By turning lights on and off remotely or on a schedule, you reduce dark, obviously empty periods that might attract opportunistic burglars

Using an away mode or custom schedules to randomly switch lamps on and off makes it appear that someone is home, which can deter burglars looking for dark, empty properties. You can also turn lights on before you arrive home late so you are not walking into a dark house, which adds a sense of personal safety as well as security.

Start by putting smart plugs on key indoor lamps that are visible from outside, then create evening and late night schedules that mimic your normal routines rather than keeping lights on all night. Combine smart plugs with basic measures like good door and window locks, outdoor lighting, and possibly cameras or alarms for a more complete home security setup
