The Mountainside Rescue Squad, established in 1938, is an independent, non-profit organization, staffed by volunteers, dedicated to providing emergency medical services to the people of Mountainside. We operate two ambulances, Rescue 1 (1071) and Rescue 2 (1072), and are staffed with volunteer EMTs and cadets.

🎗️SEPTEMBER IS PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH🎗️

This month we proudly display a gold ribbon on our ambulances and special operations vehicle in honor of every child who has faced cancer, every family who has stood beside them, and every survivor whose strength inspires us. Today we remember those we have lost and we celebrate the courage of the young warriors who continue to fight.

Behind every diagnosis is a child with a name, a family, a story, and dreams for the future

👻🎃 Our ghosts and ghouls are excited to announce the return of the Mountainside Rescue Squad’s annual Trail of Terror & Haunted House!

Join us if you dare on Saturday, October 17, from 6:00–9:00 PM at the Mountainside Rescue Squad, 1399 Route 22 East, Mountainside NJ 07092

This year, for the first time, admission will be $5 per person. We have worked hard to keep the Trail of Terror free in years past, but as the event has grown, so have the costs of bringing it to life. This modest admission fee will help offset the cost of producing the event, and proceeds will directly support the training, lifesaving equipment, and daily operations that keep our all-volunteer Rescue Squad ready to answer the call.

Every ticket helps us continue one of Mountainside’s favorite Halloween traditions and helps ensure that our volunteers are prepared when our community needs us most.

Congratulations to our newest EMT, Ana Dinic!

Ana is officially a certified Emergency Medical Technician! Over the coming months, she will train alongside our senior EMTs as she continues working toward becoming a fully cleared EMT with the Mountainside Rescue Squad.

For Ana, EMS is also a family affair. She’ll be joining her sister, a senior EMT with the Squad, and following in her footsteps serving the Mountainside community.

Good luck Ana and thank you for your dedication to the residents of the Borough and the Mountainside Rescue Squad!!

The last seven days have been busy for us!

A week ago today a large tree brought down four utility poles, causing a widespread power outage in the Borough. During the outage, we were happy to open our doors to the Atlantic Mobile Health Paramedics crew based in Mountainside while power was restored to their station, ensuring they could continue serving the community without interruption. A few days later, our EMTs answered multiple calls at the same time, placing all three of our rigs in service simultaneously.

We wrapped up the week by joining our community for this year’s National Night Out. More than 15 of our EMTs came out to showcase our equipment, meet residents, and share what we do every day. Thank you to all of our dedicated members for their continued commitment to serving Mountainside, and thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit us at National Night Out. We also want to give a special shoutout to Roselle Park Fire Buff for the awesome photos from National Night Out!

This morning, our members conducted a water-rescue training exercise at the Mountainside Community Pool. Our EMTs worked through several realistic scenarios in which lifeguards removed a patient from the water and transferred care to our crews for assessment, treatment, and transport. The lifeguards gave our members valuable insight into their protocols and the techniques they use to safely remove victims from the pool. Our members also received hands-on training with rescue throw ropes.

This was an invaluable opportunity for our members to practice responding to emergencies in and around the water while strengthening our partnership with the pool’s lifeguards. Thank you to the Mountainside Community Pool staff and lifeguards for their time, assistance, and participation. We hope to conduct another training exercise before the summer is over! What a weekend we had! In addition to storm-related calls, we responded to 19 calls between Friday night and Monday morning, including a structure fire, multiple trauma activations, and a stretch on Sunday where our crew was out of the building for more than eight consecutive hours handling back-to-back calls. Despite the busy weekend, our volunteer EMTs also stood by at the Mountainside Fourth of July fireworks while staffing all four of our units. Thank you to everyone who staffed the ambulances, helped with the fireworks standby, and made sure an ambulance was there when our community needed it most! Also thank you to Roselle Park Fire Buff for taking some great pictures of us during the fireworks and letting us share some of them!!

Just after 7PM on Sunday evening our duty crew was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a residence in town. Our duty ambulance and EMS Special Operations vehicle responded immediately and arrived shortly after Mountainside patrol officers. Recognizing the incident as a working structure fire, Lt. Deluca established EMS Branch and requested our backup ambulance, staffed by off-duty members, to respond. In total, eight of our EMTs assisted with firefighter rehab operations throughout more than two hours of fireground operations. We would also like to thank the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad for responding to assist while one of our ambulances transported a patient to a local hospital.

The scene ran flawlessly and is proof that when you train well, everyone knows their role and how to get the job done. Incidents like this require coordination between firefighters, police officers, dispatchers, EMTs, and mutual aid companies, and every piece came together exactly as intended. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported. Great work by our EMTs, the firefighters of the Mountainside Fire Department, Mountainside Police Department, and all of the mutual aid agencies that assisted!! Thank you to everyone who came to our annual EMS Week Open House last night!! We hope everyone had a great time and learned a little more about who we are and what we do.

Thank you as well to all of the squad members who worked tirelessly to plan, clean, setup, and run the open house. Events like this don’t happen without the dedication of our members!! We are proud to serve the Borough and grateful for the continued support from our community. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!!

Congratulations to Brianna Boxwell on receiving the Excellence in EMS Award from Overlook Medical Center.

Since joining our agency, Brianna has consistently focused on two things: doing what’s best for the patient and making this organization better. She’s answered hundreds of calls, mentored newer members, taken an active role in committees, and continually pushed us forward. Brianna also played a major role in launching our first 5K fundraiser, but one of her biggest accomplishments was helping lead the effort to achieve our “Always Ready for Children” accreditation and is currently our Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator. Congratulations to her and thank you for all you do!
