A message from ALDOT:
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is announcing the final closure of all US-280 lanes at Pump House Road to set the last two bridge girders.
Beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday, June 5, weather permitting, crews will shut down all US-280 lanes in both directions at Pump House Road.
Westbound lanes will remain closed through the morning of Monday, June 8. Eastbound lanes will reopen on Saturday and Sunday morning at 5 a.m. before closing again at 11 p.m. While the eastbound lanes are shut down at night, the eastbound off-ramp at Pump House Road will also be closed to traffic. Drivers will be directed to exit the highway at Green Valley Road, instead. Crews will also need to close Pump House Road at night while the crane lifts the new girders over the open section of the bridge. All US-280 lanes at Pump House Road will reopen no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, June 8.
Wider bridge features
This phase is part of the overall project to widen US-280 to four lanes in each direction from Lakeshore Parkway to I-459. The additional two girders will widen the new bridge to make room for a center turn lane and sidewalk over the highway. The contractor has worked extremely hard to complete the Pump House Road bridge replacement several months ahead of schedule.
Recommended Detours
Major delays are expected and ALDOT encourages travelers to begin planning alternate paths through this corridor now. We recommend motorists take I-459 to I-65 to Lakeshore Parkway and back to US-280 as a main detour heading west and the reverse route order for eastbound trips (See attached detour map).
ALDOT wants to thank the public for their patience during this widening effort which will greatly increase US-280 capacity when complete by early October.
Our mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For further information, visit ALDOT is planning final total US-280 closure starting June 5.
