Big news from the Lower Wabash River! TNC and partners have completed wetland habitat restoration work on three sites totaling 576 acres in southwestern Indiana and southeastern Illinois.

One of these sites is called Cottonwood Slough, located at Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area in Posey County. Prior to the restoration, there was zero usage from waterfowl. Last year, thanks to the restoration work, the peak count for Cottonwood Slough was 5,000 ducks at one time. These were mainly mallard, northern pintail, green-winged teal, ring-necks, northern shoveler and American wigeon. We also recorded 6,000 geese at one time.

Cottonwood Slough has also been a hotspot for shorebirds and wading birds. We have observed thousands of shorebirds in the spring months, including greater and lesser yellowlegs, solitary sandpiper and semipalmated sandpiper.

Two new county observations came from Cottonwood Slough as well: the black-necked stilt and black-bellied plover.

If you restore it, they will come!

Last week we had the pleasure of providing these ladies with a tour of our patch along with a u pick during their event “A Women for the Land” that was hosted by Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick county Soil & Water Conservation Districts. We had great conversations and we really enjoyed sharing our space with them!

Thank you ladies and hope to see you again!
