Our staff consists of Chief, 3 Captains, 7 Lieutenants, 30 Firefighter/Paramedics, a Fire Prevention Officer and EMS Coordinator.

First Friday just got a lot taller and it’s all for a great cause!

This Friday, September 4th, from 6–9 p.m. in front of the Mount Vernon Municipal Center, we’re putting three of Mount Vernon’s finest in our ladder truck, one hour each, and they don’t come down until you help us raise our goal of $1,000 per hour for
Knox County’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library!

We’re calling it Ladder to Literacy, and every dollar raised helps provide free books to Knox County children from birth to age five!

Who will be on the ladder?
6–7 p.m. — Assistant Fire Chief Nate Hines
7–8 p.m. — Mayor Matt Starr
8–9 p.m. — Police Chief Kit Morgan

Wear your school colors, bring a little cash for a worthy cause if you can spare it, and come point and laugh at the guys on the ladder!

And our celebration of literacy won’t stop there!
On September 25th (9/25 or “9 to 5” Day) the City of Mount Vernon will honor Dolly Parton with a mayoral proclamation recognizing her extraordinary commitment to childhood literacy and encouraging our community’s continued support of and participation in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library!

The Mount Vernon Fire Department pushed their brand new medic unit into service this morning! The fire department’s team gathered together, surrounded by their community and friends, to carry on the fire tradition of a “Push-In Ceremony” at their station. This symbol of dedication and unity dates back to when fire equipment was led by horses and had to be physically pushed back into the station after each and every call.

If it weren’t for the community’s support, the continued investment back into public safety wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for supporting our Mount Vernon Fire Department, and thank you to the brave men and women who answer the call to service this community.

Open to all Mount Vernon residents, this quick service focuses on identifying potential hazards before they become a problem. During the walkthrough, we will check the placement and operation of your smoke alarms, test your carbon monoxide detectors, and review your fire escape plans. We will also look over general fire hazards as well as electrical and heating safety.

Training today for a safer tomorrow!

Last week, the Mount Vernon Fire Department completed hands-on water rescue training to strengthen their response skills. Firefighters practiced water fundamentals, discussed hazards, completed swim tests, boat operations, self rescue skills, and victim recovery scenarios to prepare for real life emergencies.

After all of their hard work, the team ended with some fun trips down the water slide and brave jumps off the spring board!

We’re thankful for the dedication and commitment our firefighters show every day to keep our community safe.

This week has been a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices made by those who answer the call to serve.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the fire and EMS departments mourning the loss of a fallen firefighter/paramedic, and with the law enforcement agencies grieving the loss of a fallen police officer. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, coworkers, and the communities they faithfully served.

The bonds between first responders run deep. We stand with our brothers and sisters in the fire service and law enforcement during this difficult time, honoring the lives, service, and sacrifices of those who gave so much.

May we never forget their dedication, and may their memories continue to inspire all who wear the badge and the uniform.
