Temporary Operational Changes for the Knox County Compost Facility

The Knox County Commissioners announce the following temporary operational changes for the Knox County Compost Facility due to material capacity issues and an ongoing site reorganization project.

Effective Immediately:

The site will temporarily accept drop-offs from Knox County residents only.

Businesses, local governments, industries, contractors, and other non-residential organizations will not be permitted to drop off material until further notice. These temporary restrictions are necessary to reduce site volume and allow staff to improve facility operations.

Hours of Operation:

Temporary hours of operation will be Monday through Saturday, 7:00am to 5:00pm. Closed Sundays.

Effective Monday, July 6th:

The site will close temporarily beginning Monday, July 6th for all users while the site undergoes cleanup, reorganization, and operational improvements, including the development of updated guidelines and operating hours. The site will reopen when work has been completed. The estimated closure is 4 to 6 weeks.

The Knox County Board of Elections will hold a special meeting to certify the May 5, 2026 Primary Election. The meeting will be located on the first floor of 104 E Sugar St. Mount Vernon at 8 a.m. Friday May 22nd.
