UPDATE: CITY SUSPENDS ENFORCEMENT OF POLITICAL AMPLIFICATION ORDINANCE

Yesterday, the Knox Socialist League raised concerns regarding Mount Vernon City Ordinance §503.03, a law dating back to 1963 that prohibits amplified sound used to attract attention to political candidates or political issues.

We contacted the Mayor, City Council, City Clerk, and Law Director and asked the City to review the ordinance.

This morning, we received a response.
The City administration is now reviewing §503.03, and the Law Director has confirmed that the ordinance will not be enforced while that review takes place.

We appreciate the City taking these concerns seriously and responding quickly.

We also want to thank the local organizations, community members, and residents who have raised concerns about this ordinance, both now and in the past. This wasn't the work of one organization. Community members speaking up and refusing to let an issue disappear is what brought attention to it.

This is why local civic engagement matters. An outdated ordinance was identified, residents spoke up, City officials were contacted, and action followed.

The issue isn't finished. We hope to see §503.03 formally repealed or replaced with a content-neutral ordinance that protects the First Amendment rights of everyone in Mount Vernon, regardless of their politics.

Thank you to everyone who spoke up, shared information, contacted City officials, or helped bring attention to this issue.

IS MOUNT VERNON'S RULE ON MEGAPHONES UNCONSTITUTIONAL?

Mount Vernon has a strange ordinance on the books.

City Code §503.03 states:

“No person shall use or operate any loud speaker, amplifier or radio within the City for the purpose of attracting attention to any political candidate or issue…”

Read that again.

The ordinance doesn't simply prohibit excessive noise. It specifically prohibits amplified speech used to draw attention to a political candidate or issue.

That's important.

Cities have the authority to enact reasonable rules regulating noise. But laws that restrict speech based on its subject matter are generally considered content-based restrictions under the First Amendment and face much greater constitutional scrutiny.

And places like the public square have historically received particularly strong First Amendment protection as traditional public forums.

In Reed v. Town of Gilbert, the U.S. Supreme Court held that a law is content based when it applies to particular speech because of the topic discussed or the idea or message expressed.

Mount Vernon's ordinance dates to 1963.

Maybe it's simply an obsolete ordinance that's been sitting forgotten in our city code for more than sixty years.

But it's still there.

So we think there are some questions worth asking:

Why does our city code specifically prohibit amplified political speech?

Why regulate the political message instead of simply regulating excessive noise?

And most importantly:

Does The City of Mount Vernon, Ohio still consider this 1963 ordinance enforceable against peaceful political demonstrations today?

Residents of Mount Vernon deserve an answer.

KNOX COUNTY WAS BUILT BY WORKERS

For generations, working people have powered Knox County.

Workers poured metal and built engines at Cooper, made glass at Pittsburgh Plate Glass, worked the railroads and farms, and filled the factories that built Mount Vernon.

And when workers demanded better wages, shorter hours, safer conditions, and dignity on the job, they had to fight for it.

The bosses didn't give us the weekend out of kindness. They didn't raise wages because they suddenly grew a conscience. Every gain working people enjoy was won because workers organized, stood together, and demanded their share.

That struggle isn't history.

Today, workers still produce the goods, drive the trucks, maintain the machines, teach the children, stock the shelves, and keep Knox County alive. Someone else profits from their labor.

Labor Day isn't a celebration of employers.

It's a celebration of labor. Of solidarity. Of class struggle.

This Labor Day, remember which side you're on.

Too many of us are struggling with rising costs, housing insecurity, healthcare expenses, and a political system that seems more interested in serving corporations than ordinary people. Meanwhile, our communities are increasingly being asked to sacrifice land, resources, and infrastructure for the benefit of wealthy investors and large corporations.

We believe ordinary people deserve a voice in the decisions that shape our future.
The Knox Socialist League will be tabling at First Friday tomorrow, and we invite everyone to stop by and talk with us. Whether you're a socialist, socialist-curious, frustrated with the status quo, or simply interested in discussing the challenges facing our community, we'd love to meet you.

Capitalism encourages isolation, competition, and division, but our greatest strength has always been our communities and our ability to come together to solve problems collectively. A better future won't be handed to us, we have to build it together.

Memorial Day is presented to us as a day of national unity. But working people should ask: whose wars were fought, and who profited?

It has never been the children of billionaires, oil executives, or politicians who fill the graves. It is workers, farmers, and the poor who are sent overseas to fight and die for markets, resources, and empire.

And for every worker who never came home, countless others returned carrying the scars of war for the rest of their lives. Missing limbs. Broken bodies. PTSD. Addiction. Isolation. A generation of men and women sent to fight oil wars, only to come home abandoned by the same government that promised to support them.

KSL stands with all veterans. Many of our own members are veterans, workers who know firsthand the realities of war and sacrifice. Our criticism is not directed at the people sent to fight. It is directed at the capitalist system that profits from endless war while rural and working-class communities pay the price.

Knox County knows this reality well. Communities like ours provide the bodies for America’s wars while corporations collect the contracts and Wall Street collects the profits.

Today we remember the dead, stand with the living, and fight for a future where working people are no longer sent across the world to kill and die for corporate interests.

No war but class war.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the women of Knox County and beyond!

The Knox Socialist League believes the liberation of women is necessary for the liberation of all people, and that the oppression of women remains one of capitalism’s greatest failures. While women are oppressed, no one is truly free.

Today we thank our comrades, mothers, sisters, daughters, workers, caregivers, and friends for the countless ways they strengthen our communities and struggles every day.

Gas in Knox County just hit $4.99.
For rural workers and farmers, this is not just about the pump. This is about what comes next.

Fertilizer that once sailed freely through the strait is now caught up in conflict and
disruption. According to the American Farm Bureau 70% of U.S. farmers cannot afford or access sufficient fertilizer for the growing season due to price spikes caused by Middle East conflicts. Fertilizer has increased 30% in 2026 alone.

That means higher input costs. That means tighter margins. That means small farms getting squeezed even harder.

Diesel goes up. Fertilizer goes up.
Transport goes up.

Everything you need to plant, grow, and harvest gets more expensive.

And when costs rise, the system does not protect rural workers. It crushes them.

Small farmers get pushed out.
Workers get underpaid.
Rural communities, just like ours, get hollowed out.

Knox County already runs on long commutes and exported labor. Now the same system is coming for the people who feed it. They will tell you to absorb the costs, take on more debt, or sell out to bigger operations.

This is how they consolidate control. This is how they break rural independence.
And if this escalates further, it will not be corporations that suffer. It will be rural families paying more for fuel, more for supplies, and sending their kids to fight wars tied to the same global system driving these shocks.

This is what comes next.

Higher costs.
More pressure.
Less control over our own livelihoods.

Unless we organize. Find a local org that you believe in and build something local.
