STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The City of Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management stands in solidarity with the residents of Staten Island, the FDNY, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, shipyard workers, and all those impacted by the tragic shipyard fire and explosions that occurred on May 22, 2026.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the individual who lost their life, those recovering from injuries, and the courageous first responders who risked their own safety while protecting others during this incident.

In times of tragedy, communities across New York stand united. We honor the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of the firefighters, EMS professionals, police officers, and emergency personnel who answered the call without hesitation.

From Mount Vernon to Staten Island, we stand together.

The City of Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management reminds residents and visitors that several streets throughout the city will be temporarily closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2026, to accommodate the annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony honoring our fallen heroes.

Please plan ahead and allow for additional travel time. We strongly encourage the public to utilize mass transportation, carpooling, or walking when attending parade activities.

Periods of heavy rain are expected across Mount Vernon and regional surroundings on Saturday, 5/23 and Sunday, 5/24. Help prevent street flooding by clearing leaves and debris from catch basins near your home if it is safe to do so. If you’re cleaning catch basin grates, be sure to wear gloves and watch out for traffic.

You can also report a clogged catch basin by calling DPW Emergency Hotline (914) 665-2343 or submitting an email at [email protected]. Please attach photos and detail of location of concern.
