On Friday, September 11, 2026, the City of Mount Vernon will come together to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 and honor the lives lost on that tragic day, including the five Mount Vernon residents who perished at the World Trade Center.

We invite our community to join us for the 25th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Service as we gather in remembrance, reflection, and unity.

Community in Action | Investing in Our Future:

This weekend, our Auxiliary Police Unit’s Youth Community Mentor Program, led by Auxiliary Chief Rucci, was proud to support the Buddy White Project’s Back-to-School Backpack & School Supply Giveaway.

A great day of building positive relationships with our youth, engaging with families, and giving back to our community. We remain committed to mentoring the next generation and strengthening the partnership between public safety and the residents we proudly serve.

A special thank you to the Buddy White Project and all of our community partners for making this event a success.

We’ll be back out in the community this Tuesday, August 4, as the Mount Vernon Police Department hosts its Annual National Night Out at Hartley Park, beginning at 5:00 PM. Stop by, meet your public safety professionals, and enjoy an evening of family fun. We look forward to seeing you there!

Yesterday, Director Michael Montes made a historic appointment to the City of Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management Auxiliary Police Unit.

HERstory was made as Reverend Tiffini Thrower was officially sworn in as the first female Auxiliary Police Chaplain in the history of the City of Mount Vernon, NY. This historic appointment marks an important milestone and reflects the continued growth and commitment of the unit to serving both its members and the Mount Vernon community.

The evening also honored the dedicated service of three retiring members:

Auxiliary Sergeant Stonie Oates
Auxiliary Sergeant Michael Diedrick

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, Director Michael Montes, and members of the City Council extended their sincere gratitude to each of them for their years of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to the City of Mount Vernon and the Auxiliary Police Unit.

🚨 Air Quality Alert | Mount Vernon, NY🚨

The City of Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the potential for smoke from Canadian wildfires to impact air quality across our region beginning Wednesday, July 15.

While the extent of any local impacts remains uncertain, residents may notice hazy skies or reduced air quality. We encourage everyone to stay informed and be prepared.

If smoke affects our area:
🌫️ Limit prolonged outdoor activity.
🏠 Stay indoors with windows and doors closed when possible.
😷 Those with asthma, heart or lung disease, older adults, young children, and pregnant individuals should take extra precautions.
💧 Continue practicing heat safety by staying hydrated and seeking air-conditioned spaces.

OEM is working closely with the National Weather Service and regional partners and will provide updates as conditions change.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the City of Mount Vernon.

Effective: Tuesday, July 14th thru Wednesday, July 15th

Expected Conditions:

Heat index values between 94°F to 104°F degrees, with isolated areas as high as 110°F.
Very warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Protect Yourself:

Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and sugary beverages.
Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (Noon–8:00 PM).
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in vehicles.
Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and those without air conditioning.

Community Preparedness Starts with Community. 🤝🚨

Today, the City of Mount Vernon’s Office of Emergency Management was proud to partner with the Young Professionals of Mount Vernon for a successful series of Community Preparedness Event at the Doles Center.

It was an incredible day of education, engagement, and community connection as residents met with first responders, public safety professionals, and our nonprofit partners to learn valuable emergency preparedness and safety information. From preparedness resources and family activities to demonstrations and community conversations, today’s event reinforced that preparedness is a shared responsibility.

Mount Vernon, NY Emergency Management is monitoring the potential for scattered periods of heavy rainfall on 7/9 and 7/10.

Current Weather Forecast:
- Rainfall on Thursday, 7/9 and Friday, 7/10.
- Best chance of heavy rain will be Thursday afternoon & evening.
- Where storms develop, total rainfall amounts are expected to be approximately 0.25 to 0.75 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.

- Brief periods of rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible in the strongest storms.
- Wind gusts up to 25 mph.

As a reminder, should flooding occur, residents are advised not to travel over flooded roadways, avoid low-lying areas, and be prepared to move to higher ground, especially if at or below ground level.
