On September 11, we remember and we come together.

Join us at GRAC from 1–5 PM for a 9/11 National Day of Service in our new outdoor greenspace. We’ll be collecting nonperishable food donations for the Sterling Community Food Coalition, and inviting the community to add a thought, memory, or message to our community wall.

We’ll also take a moment to recognize and thank the first responders, veterans, and service members who have served and continue to serve our communities.

Come for a little while, bring what you can, and spend the afternoon reflecting and dedicating our new space to each other.

Every once in a while, I stop and wonder…

How much is too much to spend on youth sports?

When I look around at the rink, the ballfield, or the soccer complex, I see families making sacrifices that most people never see.

The vacations get postponed.

The new vehicle can wait.

Weekends disappear.

Savings accounts take a hit.

Our calendars revolve around practice schedules instead of free time.

And somehow, we keep saying, “It’s worth it.”

Not because we believe our child will become a professional athlete.

But because we see them becoming someone.

We watch them learn to lose with grace.

To work hard even when they’re not the best player on the team.

To show up when they’re tired.

To accept coaching.

To celebrate someone else’s success.

To keep trying after failure.

Those are lessons that last far longer than any season.

Of course, I also know families who don’t spend thousands on sports, and their children are growing into kind, hardworking, incredible people too. Character can be built in so many different places.

So maybe the real question isn’t whether youth sports are worth the money.

Maybe it’s this:

What experiences are helping our children become the adults we hope they’ll be?

For our family, sports happen to be one of those places.

We’ve traded vacations for tournaments.

Sleeping in for 6 a.m. games.

Quiet weekends for packed schedules.

And while I definitely don’t love the price tag, I have never regretted watching my kids discover a passion, learn resilience, and find confidence in themselves.

One day the equipment will be packed away.

The fields will be empty.

The rinks will be quiet.

The money will be long gone.

But I’m hoping the lessons they carry into adulthood will be worth every single penny.

I’m curious… if you added it all up, would you do it again?

Here's to the coaches who see more.

The coaches who see more than the value an athlete adds to the roster, and is intentional on making sure the kid knows they have value as a human.

The coaches who see more than what place their team falls in the league standings, but who also cares about making sure no kid ever questions their place on the team.

The coaches who see more than the big emotions after a tough loss, and cares about helping them learn to manage the ups and downs of the game as much as they help them build the skillset to play it.

The coaches who see more than what position an athlete plays on the field, but also sees the opportunity to help the kid position themselves to be leaders in all parts of life.

Here's to these coaches.

The ones who know they're responsible for helping athletes develop their game, but also that they have an opportunity to make an impact on the kid playing it.

Thanks for all you are.
