Barricade Incident Safely Resolved in Mount Rainier
Mount Rainier, MD – February 20, 2025

This morning, at approximately 8:46 AM, Mount Rainier Police responded to the 3400 block of Eastern Avenue for a report of a handgun pointing incident. Prior to officers’ arrival, it was reported that a renter had discharged a firearm into the air following a dispute.

Due to the circumstances, a barricade situation was declared at 10:20 AM, and assistance was provided by neighboring law enforcement agencies, including the City of Hyattsville Police Department’s Emergency Response Team. A perimeter was established, and nearby roads were temporarily closed for public safety.

At approximately 11:50 AM, officers successfully de-escalated the situation. The suspect surrendered without further incident, and two young children who were inside the residence were safely located and placed in protective care.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Mount Rainier Police Department for further investigation. Charges are pending.

Mount Rainier's bravest took the icy leap at the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge, demonstrating unwavering dedication to Special Olympics Maryland. This time-honored tradition has seen thousands plunge into the Chesapeake Bay's frigid waters for 28 years. This is MRPD first time participating in the plunge and raised $1,678 in donations, which is a testament to their commitment to empowering athletes and community.

Tomorrow night, Mount Rainier Fire Department will host their annual Santa Run, spreading joy and cheer, and Santa will be on the fire truck, es**rted by MRPD.

There will be loud sirens and bright police/fire lights that can be sensitive and overwhelming for some, but with awareness, we can make this a special night for everyone. On 12/10/2024 at approximately 2:00 AM, a series of commercial burglaries occurred within the business district of the city. At this time, surveillance footage has captured a group of 3-4 masked individuals breaking into the businesses and stealing money from the registers. It should be noted that this crime spree took place throughout the county and targeted several other locations. Mount Rainier Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is investigating these incidents.

Another Shop with a cop in the books. What an incredible experience! 28 fortunate students were chosen to embark on a $100 shopping adventure with an officer, fostering unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for community service. The students were es**rted to Target by the officers and brought back for a pizza party, symbolizing the joy of giving back.
