🍑 Nothing says summer in South Carolina quite like a fresh peach!

Today, our homebound neighbors enjoyed fresh, locally grown peaches from Mac’s Pride in McBee, SC. We love being able to provide not only nutritious meals, but also delicious seasonal treats grown right here in our state. Supporting local farmers while serving our neighbors makes today’s delivery a little sweeter. 🧡🍑

Today started off like any other day for Larry, one of our weekly volunteers.

He headed out on his usual Monday delivery route, making visits to the homebound recipients he sees each week. But when he arrived to deliver meals to Peter, one of the recipients he visits regularly, he quickly noticed that something seemed off.

Peter assured Larry that he was fine. But as Larry turned to leave, he heard a thump on the other side of the door.
Peter had fallen.

Larry alerted us to the situation and called 911 for assistance. He stayed with Peter until help arrived while we contacted Peter’s emergency contact, letting them know what had happened so they could head straight to his home to check on him.

Stories like this remind us that Meals on Wheels is about so much more than food. For many of our homebound recipients, a volunteer’s visit is also a wellness check, a friendly face, and a vital connection to the community.

If Larry had not been there today, Peter may have been left on the floor until someone happened to check on him.

A meal was delivered today, but so was something even more important: help when it was needed most.

Thank you, Larry, for showing up week after week and paying attention to our neighbors. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment to this community mean more than words can express. ❤️

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from someone in your community? ❤️

One of the best parts of what we do is getting to meet incredible people every single day: volunteers, recipients, caregivers, families, and supporters alike. Everyone has a story and wisdom worth sharing.

Did you know May is National Stroke Awareness Month?

At Meals on Wheels • Feeding Friends, we provide more than just nutritious meals, we provide connection and peace of mind for homebound adults, their families, and loved ones.

A healthy diet can help manage high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, which are major risk factors for stroke. Our meals are designed to support overall health and wellness.

Each meal delivery also serves as a daily check-in. For many of our recipients, our volunteers may be the only person they see that day. If something seems wrong, we can quickly alert family members or emergency services.

Remember the signs of stroke: FAST.
Face drooping. Arm weakness. Speech difficulty. Time to call 911.

From gala supporter to grateful recipient, Lisa never imagined she would one day rely on the mission she had long admired. When her husband Mike came home after a lengthy hospital stay, Meals on Wheels provided more than nutritious meals, it gave Lisa peace of mind during a challenging time.

“There is no shame in receiving a meal. It is a wonderful blessing and a gift to the community.”

Thank you, Lisa and Mike, for sharing your story and reminding us that sometimes the support we give comes back to us when we need it most. 💚
