City of Mount Pleasant Expands Weather Monitoring Partnership with Tennessee Valley Weather
The City of Mount Pleasant is continuing its commitment to public safety through an expanded partnership with Tennessee Valley Weather and the development of enhanced local weather-monitoring capabilities.
In September 2025, the City installed three weather cameras and two weather sensors on the WXLOGIC Hazcams platform . Since that time, the equipment has proven to be an important resource for Tennessee Valley Weather, the National Weather Service, emergency officials, and the community.
The City’s weather cameras have already captured several funnel clouds and other rapidly changing weather conditions, providing meteorologists with valuable real-time visual information during severe weather events. These observations can assist forecasters in evaluating developing storms and provide additional situational awareness as weather conditions evolve.
Following the success of the initial installations, City officials recently met with Tennessee Valley Weather Owner and Managing Meteorologist Ben Luna to discuss opportunities to further strengthen Mount Pleasant’s weather-monitoring network.
After reviewing the City’s existing camera and sensor locations, officials determined that placing additional weather sensors at strategic locations throughout the community would allow Mount Pleasant to establish a local weather mesonet.
A weather mesonet is a network of closely spaced automated weather stations designed to monitor weather conditions on a highly localized level. While traditional observation networks may have significant distances between reporting stations, a mesonet provides data from multiple locations within a smaller geographic area.
This allows meteorologists and emergency officials to better identify changes in temperature, wind speed and direction, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, and other conditions as weather systems move through the area.
During severe weather, a local mesonet can be especially valuable in identifying rapidly changing ground-level conditions associated with squall lines, tornado-producing thunderstorms, damaging straight-line winds, and microbursts. Having multiple observation points throughout Mount Pleasant can provide a clearer picture of how weather conditions vary from one part of the community to another.
Since 2020, the City of Mount Pleasant and Tennessee Valley Weather have developed a strong partnership focused on improving severe weather awareness and ensuring residents have access to timely, accurate, and localized weather information.
The development of a Mount Pleasant weather mesonet represents the next step in that partnership and reflects the City’s continued investment in public safety and preparedness.
By expanding its network of weather cameras and sensors, the City of Mount Pleasant will provide additional real-time information that can benefit meteorologists, emergency responders, the National Weather Service, and residents during both severe and everyday weather events.
The City remains committed to utilizing technology and community partnerships to help protect residents and provide the highest level of weather awareness possible.
