Although this may be fun, mixing in a motor vehicle to pull a sled is not safe and can result in injury or loss of life

🚨 SAFETY ALERT 🚨

Snow- and ice-covered roads and fields can tempt people to try activities like pulling a sled, kayak, or similar object behind a vehicle or ATV—often with children riding along. While this may look like harmless fun, these situations can turn tragic in seconds.

Recently in Frisco, Texas, two 16-year-old girls were participating in this activity when something went wrong. One lost her life, and the other was left in critical condition. Closer to home, first responders have handled similar incidents resulting in serious injuries.

What may seem fun in the moment carries extreme risk. Vehicles are difficult to control on snow and ice, and riders have little protection if something goes wrong.

Please think twice, prioritize safety, and help prevent a tragedy.

"I’m just going down the street" is the most dangerous phrase in child safety. 🏠🚗

We often think of car accidents as something that happens on long highway trips or in heavy traffic. But our local community data tells a different story.

📊 The Reality Check:

50% of all child-passenger injuries in our area happen within just 5 miles of home.

Over 60% happen within 10 miles.

When we are close to home, we tend to get relaxed. We might skip the booster seat for a "quick trip" or not double-check that the seatbelt fits correctly. But at even 25mph, a child who isn't properly restrained can be seriously injured.

The Rule: If you’re turning the key, they must be in the right seat. No matter the distance.

Is your child REALLY ready for that seatbelt? 🚗👶

We took a look at recent local incident data, and the results were a wake-up call. While infants in car seats are staying remarkably safe, we saw a spike in injuries for children aged 4 to 8 years old.

The data shows that even when buckled up, many kids in this age group are sustaining face, neck, chest, and abdominal abrasions. This happens when a child is moved to a seatbelt too early. Without a booster seat, the belt sits on the soft tissue of the neck and stomach instead of the strong bones of the shoulder and hips.

The Fix: Don’t rush the graduation! Keep them in a booster until they are at least 4'9" and the belt fits perfectly. It’s not just about being buckled; it’s about the FIT.
