Students have powerful voices, and when given the opportunity, they can create meaningful change in their communities. Earlier this year at United Way's 11th Annual PITCH-ER THIS! Youth Venture Competition, Team IM SAFE Child Advocacy Center proved just that.

IM SAFE CAC Youth Advocacy Council (YAC) took center stage, pitching their project, "What I Was Wearing". Their thoughtful presentation earned them first place and a $5,000 grant to bring their vision to life. Recently, our President & CEO, Annie Sanders, had the opportunity to present the trophy and learn more about the incredible work this group is doing.

Their "What I Was Wearing" project addresses the realities of sexual and physical assault through the stories and clothing of individuals who have experienced abuse. This exhibit serves as a powerful reminder that assault can happen to anyone, regardless of what they were wearing, where they were, or what time of day it occurred.

The courage and leadership demonstrated by these students are inspiring examples of what happens when young people are empowered to identify needs, share their ideas, and take action.

A little spare change can make a big difference! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿช™

During Homelessness Awareness Month, we invited schools across our four-county region to participate in our "Coins for a Cause" challenge. While some schools continued their collections into the spring, we're excited to celebrate the impact this initiative made!

Students came together to collect coins and raise funds to support three local organizations serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness: Hope Works Mid-Michigan formerly Gratiot County Hope House, Isabella County Restoration House, and Have Mercy. To add a little friendly competition, United Way provided a pizza party for the classroom that raised the most money at each participating school.

United Way matched donations up to $5,000 for each organization, helping make an even greater impact. Together, this effort generated $22,567.96 to support the three homeless shelters serving our region!

๐—”: I have lived in this area all of my life and have raised family here. The impact United Way has on our rural communities and the people, places, and things within them is amazing. Teaching individuals how to volunteer, showing communities the accomplishment of working together, supporting one another in times of needs is what I believe United Way should stand for and adding "Greater Central Michigan" says it all "GREATER" โ€” we are greater together than we are apart.

๐—”: I serve my community in many ways โ€” it may be donating goods for resale and the local thrift stores, helping with organizing benefits for community members, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and recruiting my children to volunteer with me at community events โ€” my children call it being "voluntold," but if it works to get them to give-back, I take it. :-)

๐—”: In my down time, my three sons (20, 22 & 26) keep me quite busy โ€” they keep me smiling and amazed everyday with their whit, charm and kindness. My husband and I enjoy outdoor activities with my favorite season being summer โ€” I love being on a motorcycle with "the wind in my hair," relaxing at the pool, mowing the lawn (yes, mowing the lawn), and best-of-all, time around the fire with family and friends.

Thank you, Christa, for your dedication to helping build a stronger community. ๐Ÿ’™
