🤯 You've walked Shem Creek dozens or hundreds of times, but you never knew the area was a critical defense line in America's first major victory over the British during the Revolutionary War.
In 1775, Haddrell’s Point Battery was ordered to be built from the mouth of Shem Creek all the way to Cove Inlet - aka Pitt Street Bridge.
In 1776, as British warships moved into Charleston Harbor, Patriot forces prepared to defend the Lowcountry.
Haddrell’s Point Battery helped guard key waterways and supported the harbor defenses during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28, 1776, the first major American victory of the Revolutionary War.
