Sanpete Valley Railway

Sanpete Valley Railway This is a ground-level 15″ gauge, 5″ scale model railway that can haul passengers using engines that are models of full-sized, coal-fired steam locomotives

The original Sanpete Valley Railway was established in May 1882. It was originally built as a three-foot narrow gauge railroad that was chartered to move coal from Manti, Utah to Nephi Utah. The Sanpete Valley Railway was sold to the Denver & Rio Grand and Western Railway (D&RGW) in 1908, and became the D&RGW’s Marysvale Branch. The line was finally completely abandoned in the spring of 1983 when

it was destroyed by a catastrophic flood in Thistle Canyon. Danny Oldroyd, of Mount Pleasant, Utah is the inspiration and the builder of the Grand Scale Sanpete Valley Railway’s engines and train cars and the railroad designer. The railroad is located on Jim Berlin’s property at 125 North 500 West. Jim is a long-time co-conspirator on this project. Leroy Brady, Seth & Sydnie Farley, Chris & Jen Dries, Jason Baccigaluppi, David (Clancy) Johnson, Chris (Gern) Galibraith, John Oldroyd, David Holmes, Luke Austin and many others have labored tirelessly to bring the SVR Grand Scales Railroad to life!

It took more than a full year after pulling the 19 into the shop for refitting before she was back on the rails. Several projects were put ahead of her, then we were invited to the 30th Anniversary of the Reedley Railfest which occurred on 4/16-04/17/2024 in Reedley California. That was certainly an inspiration to get the locomotive retrofitted from coal to oil in a hurry!

Danny changed the locomotive from being coal fired to an oil fired burner. He didn't have a chance to fire the engine before we left Utah, but with the help of the Reedley Hillcrest Railroad & the Redwood Valley Railway Crews, he got her unloaded from the trailer, towed into the shop and fired. There were a few blips along the way, but we sure had a good time.

It was sure good to see everybody on a non-work day. Thanks to Mike Hansen for bringing the home made potato salad and Cate & Bob MacGillivray for the wonderful baked beans. We had nice weather and a REALLY BIG FIRE! The fire was so big that we had to build a smaller one at a distance to cook the hot dogs. I think it may burn for several more days.

Update Part 3: Unfortunately, there was some wind damage last weekend. Seth to the rescue! Besides having tree sized limbs that needed to be removed, there was one piece of track that needed to be straightened and the RR Xing sign was nearly wiped out.
