East Cooper Montessori Charter School

East Cooper Montessori Charter School East Cooper Montessori Charter School ECMCS is located in Mt. The Montessori approach encourages students to think, to do and to problem solve.

Pleasant, just minutes from historic downtown Charleston, award winning restaurants, expansive shopping, theaters, golf courses and miles of ocean beaches. Our diverse student population consists of 450 students in grades 3K through 8th, with a supportive and involved family environment. The teacher presents the curriculum to best address each student’s learning style. The teacher supports students needing to spend additional time in certain curriculum areas while allowing students to excel in areas of interest. Grades are blended in three-year increments: 3K-K, 1-3, 4-6 and 7-8. Mixed grade learning supports older students as they mentor younger pupils; younger children reach for new knowledge and model older children. Working with the same students for multiple years, teachers develop an intimate understanding of each student’s potential. The middle school program offers high school credits in four areas. The school’s rigorous academic program is characterized by individualization and high standards for each student. Learning may occur in such ways as isolated study seminars, cooperative learning groups, creative writing or story telling, or skits. In addition to academic excellence, goals for each student include experience in community service and a personal development plan for the years beyond the school

The core philosophy of the school is the integration of family and cultural values into the governance and curriculum. The central focus is the belief that families are ultimately responsible for their child’s growth and development and that the school and community are resources to the family. Parental involvement at home and through volunteerism is strongly encouraged, and communication between school and family is essential.

BINGO! 💚💜

What a night! Our sold-out Bingo Night brought ECMCS families together for an evening of games, prizes, pizza, laughter, and plenty of friendly competition. 🎉

And the fun had an even bigger purpose. Bingo Night supports our ☀️ Sunshine Fund, which helps our parent community show appreciation for ECMCS faculty and staff throughout the year. From monthly staff lunches and our weekly treat cart to holiday gifts and other special gestures of gratitude.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, volunteered, donated, and helped make the evening such a success. We love seeing our school community come together like this!

Our Golden Eagles are officially underway! 💚🦅

Today, ECMCS grandparents and grandfriends gathered for coffee, conversation and a morning of cutting materials for our classrooms.

The Golden Eagles are a wonderful way to volunteer, connect with others and become part of your family’s school community. Interested in joining us? Grandparents and grandfriends are invited to Golden Hour every Friday at 10 a.m. We would love to see you there! 💚

Unite. De-stress. Commit. Connect. 💚

Our Lower and Upper Elementary students recently came together for a Town Hall centered on these four shared goals.

Together, students established Town Hall norms and added their individual strengths to a Superpower Chain, creating a visual reminder of what each person contributes to our community. The ECMCS Cheer Team brought plenty of school spirit, along with a special visit from our mascot, Cooper! 💚

Town Hall gives students the opportunity to listen, share their voices and take shared responsibility for the community they are building together.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Maria Montessori, born August 31, 1870, and the ideas that continue to shape the way children learn at East Cooper Montessori Charter School.

More than 150 years later, her belief in children as capable, curious and independent learners is visible throughout our school, from hands-on learning and meaningful work to opportunities to explore, discover and develop responsibility for themselves, one another and their community.

At ECMCS, Montessori's work isn't simply part of our history. It's something we see in action every day, brought to life by our students, teachers and families.

Together, our community makes the Montessori Difference possible.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Montessori! 🎈

Learning beyond the classroom 🌿

Our middle school students started the year off with experiences intentionally designed to give them time to connect, take on new challenges, and build community together.

Our 6th and 7th graders headed to Camp Chatuga for time in nature, archery, water activities, gardens, textile making, and plenty of fun in between.

Our 8th graders took on an adventure of their own with whitewater rafting, ziplining, yurt living, and evenings around the campfire. They stepped outside their comfort zones, trusted one another, and grew closer as a class.

These experiences are an important part of our middle school program. At a time when students are developing a stronger sense of who they are and their place within a community, this intentional time together gives them opportunities to build independence and confidence, strengthen relationships, and discover what they are capable of.

A meaningful way to start the year together. 🌿

ECMCS Middle School Volleyball Needs YOU!

Our middle school volleyball teams are looking for a few parents who are willing to volunteer as coaches and help our girls have another great season!

They have so much fun playing, competing, and most importantly spending time together as a team. These girls LOVE volleyball! 💚

Practices are 1–2 times per week at the Mount Pleasant Town Hall gym, behind Whole Foods.

You don't have to be a professional coach—just someone willing to give your time, encourage our girls, and help them learn and grow!

Can you help? Or do you know someone who would be a great coach?

Please reach out to Mr. Laughton if you are interested or know someone who may be willing to volunteer.
[email protected]

Thank for helping keep ECMCS volleyball going strong! 🏐💚

What do Montessori educators do in Italy? They visit the very first Casa De Bambini, of course! It was opened in 1907 and is still in operation in its original location. It was so inspiring to walk the grounds that Maria walked and see the place it all began 120 years ago!

Today, our school honors the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country through our Missing Man Table display.
Every item on the table carries meaning — the empty chair, the folded flag, the single rose, the candle, the slice of lemon, and the untouched plate — each serving as a quiet reminder of those who are missing from our gatherings because they gave everything in service to others.

As Memorial Day approaches, we pause to remember that freedom is never free. We are grateful for the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our fallen service members and the families who continue to carry their memory forward.

May we teach our students not only to celebrate freedom, but also to honor the cost at which it came. 🇺🇸
