Picture this:

It’s 2:14 AM in Wayne County.
Rain pouring. Somebody’s house is on fire. Kids are standing outside barefoot. A family’s entire life is changing in real time.

And somewhere nearby, a pager goes off.

Not for a superhero.
Not for a paid celebrity athlete.
For an ordinary person who decided to volunteer.

A mechanic.
A lineman.
A farmer.
A water plant operator.
A person who was sitting on the couch 3 minutes ago.

That person gets up, throws on shoes, and goes.

That could be you.

Most people spend their lives wanting to matter more. Wanting purpose. Wanting something real. Volunteer fire service gives you that immediately. When you show up on scene, people are relieved just because you arrived.

You’ll do things most people never experience:

* Ride a fire engine lights and sirens through your own community
* Train with people who become family
* Push yourself physically and mentally
* Learn how to stay calm when everybody else panics
* Be part of something bigger than yourself

And years from now, when somebody says:

“Thank God the fire department got here…”

You’ll know you were part of that.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be fearless. Every firefighter started as the new guy who didn’t know anything.

What matters is showing up.

Wayne County’s volunteer departments need people willing to answer the call. Not someday. Now.

So the real question is:

If your community needed help tonight… would you want to be standing on the sidelines watching, or stepping off the truck helping?

The N.C. Forest Service has lifted their ban on all open burning in 81 counties effective 8am on May 3. With this news, Wayne County’s burn ban will also be lifted at the same time.

We’re still in a drought so please be careful if you decide to start a fire!

04/10/2026

The Wayne County Fire Marshal’s Office has issued a burn ban for all of Wayne County, effective at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 10. The ban will remain in place until further notice.

This follows a statewide burn ban issued on March 28. The county ban allows local officials to enforce the restriction and issue penalties for violations.

Dry conditions, weather that can help fires spread quickly, and little rain in the forecast have increased the risk of wildfires. Residents are asked not to burn outdoors until the ban is lifted to help protect people, homes, and first responders.

03/29/2026

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Good afternoon, as it stands right now we will have winter weather move in over night and tomorrow. The forcast doesn’t show freezing rain at this time but thats no reason to let your gaurd down, snow is still slippery! With temperatures well below freezing any melting during the day has the potential to re-freeze during the night. Please use extreme caution if you are forced to travel. With this system we are expecting some wind and this could lead to potential power outages. Please make sure you have what you need in the event you loose power. As always during an emergency please call 911.

Good morning, with winter weather possible this weekend we wanted to share some information.

As the forcast is now and we get ice please limit traveling. Now is the time to prepare! Make sure you have your essentials! Medications, bottled water, non perishable food, warm clothes, flashlight etc.

In the event we loose power and you use a generator please make sure it is in a well ventilated area. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer it can’t be seen nor smelled.

In the event you find yourself on the road and see a vehicle in the ditch with yellow tape (caution, scene, fire scene) this is a marker stating this vehicle’s been checked and is vacant. In the event you have an accident please call 911 and they will prioritize your needs and get the appropriate response agencies en-route.

This is a great time to make sure your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors have good batteries. Press the test button on them and just run a simple test on them. A working alarm could save your life!

Last night was our annual “Ladies Night” banquet we host each year. This gives us a chance to say “thank you” to the wives, significant others and children of our members. Being a volunteer sometimes requires our members to leave home at inconvenient times and long hours and with that being said we like to say thank you to the ladies and children and give them a steak dinner.

Each year we recognize an individual that was voted on by his peers to receive the C.W. Smith Fireman of the Year award. We are pleased to announce our recently promoted Assistant Chief Adam McCullen received this award for 2025. Thank you for your hard work and dedication Chief McCullen. Pictured below is our Fire Chief Joey McCullen with his son Adam. Chief J. McCullen received a leather helmet from the members for his steadfast dedication to our department for the last 40 years Congratulations men, thank you!
